15마리의 서커스단의 동물들을 태우고 다음 공연 장소인 보스톤으로 가던 중, 짙은 안개와 악천후로 인해 암초에 부딪혀 침몰하는 사고가 발생합니다. 탐욕스럽고 이기적인 서커스단 주인은 물 속에 빠져서 위기에 처한 동물들을 내팽겨쳐 둔 채 구명보트를 타고 자신의 목숨만 구합니다.
배를 타고 있던 15마리의 동물들은 헤엄을 쳐서 근처에 있는 작은섬에 도착합니다. 사자, 호랑이, 비단뱀, 얼룩말, 타조, 낙타, 코끼리, 곰, 하마, 영양, 표범, 악어, 기린, 원숭이, 고릴라...
아침에 잠에서 깨어난 주민들은 섬 곳곳에 처음보는 야생동물들이 활개를 치고 돌아다는 것을 보고는 모두 경악을 했습니다. 마을 주민들은 처음에는 이 야생 동물들을 두려워 했습니다만, 시간이 지나면서 이 동물들이 자신을 해치지 않을 거라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그리고 섬에서 불이 났을 때, 서커스에서 불이 붙은 링을 통과하는 묘기를 자주 했던 호랑이가 불 속으로 뛰어 들어 어린 아이를 구하게 되자, 섬주민들은 동물들을 더욱 친근하게 느끼게 되었습니다.
그러던 어느날, 서커스단 주인은 이 섬에 동물들이 산다는 소문을 듣고 동물들을 되찾으러 섬에 들어갔습니다만....
책 말미에는 서커스 주인의 눈을 피하기 위해 섬 곳곳에 숨어 있는 15마리의 동물들을 찾아보는 "숨은그림 찾기"를 할 수 있습니다.
유머와 교훈이 있는 재미있는 책입니다.

After their steamship en route to Boston is wrecked in a storm, a troupe of circus animals escapes bad treatment and disaster, finding its way to an island off the coast of Maine. The 1800s residents are surprised to find zebras eating their gardens and alligators lounging on woodpiles. Sympathies change when a tiger saves a toddler from a blazing shed. When a messenger announces that the cruel circus owner is returning to claim his menagerie, the citizens assist the animals in disguises and camouflage that confound him, leaving the friends to a peaceful coexistence. Van Dusen's rhymed text keeps a rollicking beat. His illustrations burst with color and energy and utilize perspective and texture to add drama and humor. Period details create a counterpoint with elements like a gorilla in a lifeboat. The spread of the animals in "hiding" is pure genius. The book honors the real circus animals that inspired this story.
