좌절과 절망으로 외롭고 슬플 때, 누군가 손 내밀어준다면 얼마나 고마울까요? 그로 인해 좌절을 이겨내고 다시금 세상에 나아갈 용기를 갖게 되니까요. 꼭 말로 위로해 주고 해답을 제시하지 않아도 상관없습니다. 그저 곁에서 진심 어린 태도로 내 이야기에 귀 기울여 들어주는 것만으로도 세상에 나 혼자가 아니구나 하는 생각에 저절로 힘이 생기지요. 이 그림책의 주인공 테일러에게 토끼는 바로 그런 존재입니다.

테일러는 정성을 다해서 블럭들을 쌓아올려 멋진 성을 만들었습니다. 보기만 해도 정말 뿌듯했지요. 그런데 난데없이 새들이 날아와 그만 와르르 무너져버리고 말았습니다. 절망과 실의에 빠진 테일러. 이런 테일러의 상태를 처음 알아챈 건 닭이었습니다. “말해 봐. 말해 봐. 어떻게 된 건지 말해 봐! 꼬꼬댁 꼬꼬꼬!” 닭은 호들갑을 떨었지요. 하지만 테일러는 왠지 말하고 싶지 않았습니다. 닭은 토라져 가버렸습니다.

다음엔 곰이 왔습니다. “정말 화나겠다. 그럴 땐 소리를 질러! 크아아아앙.” 하지만 테일러는 소리 지르고 싶지 않았습니다. 곰도 닭처럼 가버렸습니다.

다음에 다가온 건 코끼리였습니다. “뿌우우우! 내가 고쳐줄게. 원래 어떤 모양이었는지 잘 떠올려 봐봐.” 하지만 테일러는 떠올리고 싶지 않았습니다. 코끼리도 가버렸습니다. 그 다음에도 하나 둘 친구들이 다가왔습니다. 그들은 자기만의 방식을 테일러에게 가르치려고 했습니다. 하지만 테일러는 그 누구와도, 아무것도 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그래서 결국 모두 가버렸습니다.

모든 동물들이 떠나고 테일러는 혼자 남겨졌습니다. 테일러는 애써 만든 것이 무너져버렸을 때보다 더 외롭고 슬픕니다. 자기 마음을 알아주기는커녕 다들 이래라 저래라 하고 시키는 대로 하지 않는다고 그냥 가버렸으니까요. 그럴수록 테일러의 마음은 점점 더 굳게 닫히고 절망감은 커져만 갑니다.

얼마나 시간이 지났을까, 이번에는 토끼가 왔습니다. 토끼는 조금씩, 조금씩 다가왔습니다. 그러고는 조용히 테일러 옆에 앉습니다. 테일러가 따뜻한 토끼의 체온을 느낄 때까지 그대로 앉아 있습니다. 그러자 테일러가 이야기를 시작합니다. 토끼는 테일러의 이야기를 가만히 들어줍니다. 테일러는 소리도 지르고, 기억해 내고… 마침내 웃습니다. 그러는 내내 토끼는 테일러 곁을 떠나지 않고 가만히 들어줍니다. 때가 되자, 테일러가 말합니다. “나, 다시 만들어볼까?” 토끼는 고개를 끄덕입니다. 그러자 테일러는…
