부부 사이인 Ruth Krauss(글)과 Crockett Johnson(그림) 부부가 Carrot Seed에 이어 함께 만든 작품입니다. Ruth Krauss는 A Happy Day와 The Very Special House의 글을 써서 2차례 Caldecott상을 받았으며, Crockett Johnson은 Harold and the Purple Crayon으로 잘 알려진 저명한 Illustrator입니다.
아주 작은 새가 있었습니다. 이제 막 태어났기 때문에 아직 알 속에 있었죠. 걸을 수도, 노래를 부를 수도, 훨훨 날 수도 없지요. 어미새가 알 위에 앉아서 기다립니다. 기다리고, 기다리고, 기다리고, 또 기다리고.... 그러던 어느날 작은 새가 알을 깨고 세상 밖으로 나옵니다. 걷고, 노래부르고, 훨훨 하늘을 납니다... 그리고 언젠가는 작은 새도 알을 낳고 다른 새끼가 태어날 때까지 그 위에 앉아서 기다리겠지요...
부부가 함께 만든 Carrot Seed에서는 식물의 탄생에 대한 소망과 믿음을 다루었지만, 이 책에서는 동물인 작은 새를 통해 같은 메세지를 독자에게 전달해 줍니다. Carrot Seed에서 보여줬던 것과 같이, 황금색 여백 위에 그림을 한쪽 모서리에 배치하고, 문장은 맞은 편 페이지의 하얀 여백의 한 귀퉁이에 배치함으로써 단순함의 미학을 추구합니다. 그러나 한편으론 이런 단순함으로 인해 너무 정적이고 지루하게 흐르지 않도록 맨 처음 문장의 첫글자와, 알, 그리고 새로 태어난 작은 새를 파란색으로 강조하고 있으며, 알의 옆에 있는 화초가 시간의 흐름에 따라 자라는 모습을 보여줌으로써 동적인 변화를 가미합니다.

A welcome reissue teams a text by Ruth Krauss (A Hole Is to Dig) with the artwork of her husband, Crockett Johnson, The Happy Egg (1967). Recalling his illustrations in The Carrot Seed, Johnson uses deceptively simple line art and white space along with backdrops of gold (and blue he uses for the egg). Krauss, with her usual understated humor, observes the egg without losing sight of its potential ("It couldn't walk./ It couldn't sing./ It couldn't fly./ It could just get sat on"). When the newborn hatches ("It could walk./ It could sing./ It could fly"), the artwork depicts the tiny blue fledgling soaring off the upper right-hand corner of the spread. A small gem.

About the Author
Ruth Krauss, a member of the experimental Writer's Laboratory at the Bank Street School in New York City in the 1940s, imaginatively used humor and invented words to create some of the very first books for children that highlighted the child's inner life. She collaborated with some of the greatest illustrators in children's literature, including her husband, Crockett Johnson. |
