우연히 숲 속에서 만난 소년과 로보트는 친구가 됩니다. 그리고 함께 신나게 놀았지요. 그런데 언덕에서 굴러 내려오면서 놀다가 로보트의 스위치가 돌멩이에 걸리는 바람에 스위치가 꺼져버리고 말았습니다.

꼼짝도 하지 않고 누워있는 것을 보고 소년은 로보트가 "몸이 아프다고" 생각했습니다. 소년은 로보트를 집으로 끌고 와서 환자들에게 하듯이 애플소스도 먹이고, 책도 읽어주었으며, 편하게 잘 수 있도록 이불을 덮어서 문 뒤에 두었습니다. 그리고 소년도 이불을 덮고 잠이 들었습니다.

소년의 부모가 문을 열었다가 스위치를 건드리는 바람에 다시 작동을 하게 된 로보트는 소년이 꼼짝하지 않고 누워있는 것을 보고는 "고장이 났다고" 생각했습니다. 소년을 안고 자기 집으로 돌아 온 로보트는 소년을 "고치기" 위해 윤활유도 치고, 작동법 메뉴얼도 읽어 줬으며, 예비 밧데리도 가지고 왔습니다.

그때 로보트를 만든 발명가가 나타나서 로보트에게 소년은 기계가 아니라 사람이라고 설명해 주고, 잠에서 깨어난 소년은 로보트가 다시 "건강해진 것"을 보고 기뻐합니다. 물론 로보트도 소년이 "고쳐진 것"을 보고 기뻐했지요. 그리고 그 후에도 로보트와 소년은 항상 함께 놀고 서로를 위해주는 더욱 친한 친구가 되었습니다.

서로를 위하고 아껴주는 소년과 로보트를 통해 어린 독자들이 "진정한 친구와 참된 우정"의 의미를 깨달을 수 있는 재미있고 유익한 내용입니다.

While picking pinecones, a boy meets a bright-red, rocket-shaped robot and asks, “Want to play? “Affirmative!” the robot responds, and the pair has tons of fun until a rock bumps the robot’s power switch off. Not understanding the bot’s unresponsiveness, the boy wheels him home and begins feeding him applesauce, reading him a story, and crafting a makeshift bed. When the boy’s parents, unaware of a robot behind the door, check on their son, the door bumps the robot’s power switch back on. Not distinguishing the boy’s unresponsiveness as sleep, the robot, in a humorous reversal, fears the boy has malfunctioned and carries him back to his laboratory, where he gives him oil and begins to prepare a new battery - when, just in time, the not-evil-at-all inventor shows up to put things right. The spare text (“Boy! You-are-fixed!”) replicates the steady beats of the simple yet comedic story, while Yaccarino’s expressive, quirky, and humorously geometric gouache illustrations make the boy and robot’s relationship all the more endearing.
