스펜서는 책을 너무나도 사랑하는 아이입니다. 자기 전에는 꼭 책을 읽었지요. 그리고 읽은 책은 찾기 쉽도록 책꽂이의 정해진 장소에 꽂아두었습니다.

그런데 어느날 아침, 침대에서 일어나보니 어제밤에 읽었던 책이 사라진 것을 발견합니다. 책이 있었던 자리에는 튤립꽃 한 송이가 놓여 있었습니다. 그리고 다음날 아침에도, 그 다음날 아침에도 책이 한권씩 사라졌으며, 이런 이상한 일은 매일 아침마다 반복되었습니다. 그리고 책 대신에 튤립꽃이나 볼트와 너트가 놓여 있었습니다.

밤마다 누가 책을 가져가는 걸까요? 집안 구석구석을 찾아봤지만 책은 한권도 발견되지 않았어요. 엄마와 아빠는 모르는 일이라고 하고, 동생은 자신은 절대 가져가지 않았다며 울음을 터트리네요. 결국 책꽂이에 책이 한권만 남게 되자 스펜서는 범인을 발견하기 위한 좋은 아이디어가 떠올랐습니다. 책에 줄을 단단하게 묶은 후, 줄의 다른쪽 끝에는 돌고래 풍선을 매달았습니다. ㄱ리고 다음날 아침이 되자, 역시 책은 사라졌지만, 둥둥 떠있는 돌고래 풍선 덕에 범인을 발견하게 됩니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 범인은...
