깨달음을 얻은 석가모니는 녹야원이라는 동산에서 다섯명의 비구 수행자에게 최초의 가르침을 주었습니다. 그 내용은 어느 곳에도 치우치지 않는 중도의 길, 세상 고통의 원인인 집착, 이를 벗어난 평화, 그리고 그에 이르는 방법에 관한 것 등이었습니다. 중부 인도 각지를 45년의 세월에 걸쳐 설법, 교화를 계속한 석가모니는 마침내 80세에 이르러 쿠시나가라의 숲에서 열반하였습니다.
