[ 책 소개 ]

국내에는 "난 개구리인 게 싫어요"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 베스트셀러 "I Don't Want to Be a Frog"의 저자인 Dev Petty (글), Mike Boldt(그림)이 다시 힘을 합쳐 만든 재미있는 그림책입니다.

꼬마 개구리는 키가 커져서 어른 개구리가 되는 것이 너무 싫습니다. 그래서 아빠 개구리가 밥그릇을 들고 쫓아 다니면서 먹일려고 하지만 밥 먹는 것을 한사코 거부하네요. 키가 크면 나무 위로 점프해서 그곳에 사는 청개구리들도 만나볼 수 있고, 높은 곳에 있는 먹이도 뛰어 올라가서 먹을 수 있는 등 장점이 많지요.

그런데 도대체 왜 꼬마 개구리는 키가 커지는 것을 싫어 할까요?

키가 커지면 연잎 위에 앉아서 다리를 뻗을 수도 없고,
머리를 여기저기 부딪힐 수도 있으며,
코끼리와 숨바꼭질을 할 때도 쉽게 들켜버릴 수 있고,
뜨거운 태양에 더 가까와 지고,
신발도 훨씬 더 커다란 것을 신어야 한다고 하네요.

하지만 꼬마 개구리는 덩치 큰 돼지를 만난 후 생각을 바꿉니다. 돼지는 키가 크다고 해서 꼭 어른이 되는 것은 아니며, 자신은 키가 크지만 아직 어린 아이같이 진흙탕에서 신나게 뒹굴고 논다고 말해 줬지요.

꼬마 개구리는 키가 크기 싫은 이유를 여러가지 댔지만, 결국 가장 큰 이유는 어른이 되는 것이 두려워서 계속 아이로 남고 싶었나 봅니다...

A little frog has a spirited discussion about why he doesn't want to be big in this amusing picture book. Two bright green frogs, one little and one big, talk about why eating dinner is so important. The little frog goes on to explain that he does not need to eat dinner, since he has no interest in being big. After some hilarious questioning from the older frog, the little frog finally decides that getting big might not be so bad, as long as he does not ever have to take a bath. The lively illustrations, with few background details, are a great match for the use of speech bubbles in each spread and are reminiscent of Mo Willems's "Elephant and Piggie" series. Children should be able to easily identify which character is talking throughout. VERDICT An amusing book about why getting big doesn't necessarily mean you have to grow up.
