[ 책 소개 ]
Caldecott 수상작인 When I Was Young in the Mountains의 Illustrator인 Diane Goode가 만든 어린이용 식탁 예절책입니다. 작가의 남편이 우연히 골동품점에서 발견한 19세기의 식사예절책을 바탕으로 유머러스한 그림을 곁들여 만들었습니다.
애보츠 가족의 초대를 받아 함께 만찬을 즐겨볼까요? 하지만 식사를 하기 전에 식탁 예절에 대해서 어린 아이들에게 숙지토록하는 것은 필수겠지요.
- 식사 전에 손과 얼굴을 깨끗이 씻고, 머리도 단정히 빗어야 합니다.
- 부모나 어른이 앉기 전까지는 먼저 식탁에 앉아서는 안됩니다.
- 어른이 먹기 전에는 먼저 음식에 손을 대서는 안되며, 음식을 먹을 때는 머리를 접시쪽으로 약간 숙여서 먹습니다.
- 먹거나 마시는 동안에는 목, 입, 입술 등으로 소리를 내서는 안됩니다.
- 음식에 대해서 불평을 말해서는 안됩니다.
- 테이블 밑으로 음식을 흘리거나 던져넣어서는 안됩니다.
- 식탁에서는 침을 뱉거나, 기침을 하거나, 코를 풀어서는 안됩니다. 하지만 부득이하게 이런 행동을 해야만 할 때는 고개를 옆으로 돌리고 최대한 작은 소리가 나도록 해야 합니다.
- 빵은 입으로 덥석 뜯어먹으면 안되며, 반드시 한 입에 먹을 만큼 손으로 떼서 입으로 넣어야 합니다.
- 아무리 고기가 뜨거워도 입으로 호호 불어서 식히면 안되며, 자연스럽게 알맞은 온도가 될 때까지 기다려야 합니다.
- 칠면조와 같이 큰 덩어리 고기는 아무리 먹고 싶어도 손수 떼어 먹으면 안되며, 주인이나 웨이터가 칼로 썰어서 써빙할 때까지 기다려야 합니다.
- 나이프 끝을 세워서 위로 향하게 해서는 안되며 반드시 아래쪽으로 기울게 쥐고 있어야 합니다.
- 갈비뼈와 같이 뼈가 있는 음식은 입으로 뼈를 발라 먹어서는 안됩니다.
- 냅킨이나 손에 음식 기름등을 너무 많이 뭍혀서는 안되며, 이쑤시개를 사용할 때는 냅킨으로 입을 가리고 사용해야 합니다.
- 식탁에서 팔꿈치로 고여서 손으로 턱을 받치고 있으면 안되며, 의자에 등을 기대서도 안됩니다.
- 식탁에서 어른들이 얘기하는 동안은 조용히 있어야 합니다.
- 입에 음식을 넣은 상태에서는 물을 마시거나 얘기를 해서는 안됩니다.
- 어른들의 얼굴을 뚫어져라 쳐다보거나, 다른 사람의 접시 위를 뚫어져라 쳐다보면 안됩니다.
- 식탁보로 입을 닦거나 해서 더렵혀서는 안됩니다.
- 자두씨나 체리씨와 같이 딱딱한 것을 앞쪽으로 뱉어서는 안되며, 왼손에 살짝 뱉은 후 접시의 한쪽 옆에 놓아야 합니다.
- 과식하지 말고 적당량만 먹어야 합니다.
- 입을 음식으로 꽉꽉 채워서 먹어서는 안되며, 소량씩 씹어 먹어야 합니다.
- 자기 접시에 음식이 없다고 얼굴을 찡그리거나 불평을 말해서는 안됩니다.
- 음식을 게걸스럽게 빨리 먹어서는 안됩니다.
- 음식을 삼키기 전에 다시 음식을 입에 넣어서는 안됩니다.
- 음식을 적당히 다 먹은 후에는 테이블에서 일어나서 어른들에게 공손하게 인사를 하고 조용히 식탁을 떠납니다.
예법을 지키지 않으면 어떤 모습으로 보이는지를 보여주는 유머러스한 그림과 함께 어린 아이들이 식탁에서 지켜야 할 총 35가지의 식사 예법을 재미있게 배울 수 있습니다.
이 책의 본문은 19세기의 식사예절책을 바탕으로 만들었기 때문에 일부 단어들은 고어를 그대로 사용하고 있으며, 책 말미에는 책에 수록된 35가지 식사 예절을 일목요연하게 모아서 다시 수록하고 있습니다.

But watch out: the Abbotts and their dogs have absolutely atrocious table manners. They speak with their mouths full, complain about the food they are serving, and argue in front of the company. The Abbotts also violate some more obscure table-manner taboos, such as smelling their meat and staring what’s on the plate of a dinner companion.
With rules lifted in the vernacular from an early-nineteenthcentury primer (the full text of the rules is appended), and uproarious pictures that do most of the storytelling, this is a lively and wonderful celebration of good manners.
Children's Literature.
This charmingly illustrated book uses text from an 1802 book that claims to "render reading completely easy to little children and to impress upon their minds the importance of religion, and the advantages of good manners." Author Diane Goode uses the 1802 language about manners along the top of her pages and then creates illustrations for the rest of the page that provide a comic look at what happens when the Abbotts, who have invited another family over to dine, do not follow the rules on manners. Young readers will have a difficult time reading the language from 1802. Although many of the words may be familiar, the sentence structures will not be, "Foul not the table-cloth. Spit not fourth any thing that is not convenient to be swallowed, as the stones of plumbs, cherries or such like; but with thy left hand neatly remove them to the side of thy plate." The illustrations throughout the text are the selling point of this title, without question.

After receiving a spelling book published in 1802 that includes a list of 35 rules for children's behavior at the table, Goode was inspired to create this book in which the precepts are stated in the text and then flagrantly and hilariously broken in the illustrations. A family happily accepts an invitation to dine with the Abbots. However, things go awry before they are even seated when the first rule, "Come not to the table without having your hands and face washed, and your head combed," goes by the wayside as the Abbotts' dogs greet the visitors by knocking one of the children into a mud puddle. The meal goes from bad to worse as the hosts gorge on entire pies when admonished, "Stuff not thy mouth so as to fill thy cheeks." The charming watercolors are also carefully researched, and the irony of proper 19th-century setting and dress coupled with bone gnawing and fish-head flinging adds to the humor.

Before you accept an invitation to dine with the Abbots, there are certain things to remember: mind your manners! Goode has transformed this 19th-century etiquette primer into a degustatory romp as the host family speaks with their mouths full, spit, slobber, throw bones on the floor, soil the tablecloth, even fall out of their chairs. Simple but precisely defining lines, a pastel palette and period dress detail the scenes and capture the facial expressions of the guests that register disgust, shock or disbelief as the rhymes exaggerate the "what-not-to-dos." An author's note explains how her inspiration came from an 1802 child's spelling book that contained a lesson, "Of children's behaviour at table." All 35 cautions from the original book are included. Look carefully at every spread so as not to miss a crumb of this delicious humor. |
