버디는 항상 텐션이 높은 수다쟁이 새입니다. 아침에 일어나자마자 아무도 없는데도 해와 하늘을 향해 말을 하고, 듣는 사람이 없는데도 자기가 좋아하는 것과 싫어하는 것들에 대해서도 재잘댑니다.그리고 친구들에게 이것저것 여러가지를 묻습니다만, 친구들이 대답할 틈도 주지않고 계속 말을 하지요. 버디는 말많은 수다쟁이이지만, 결코 좋은 Listener는 아니었어요.

어느날 버디가 숲 속에 들어갔다가 계속 혼자 재잘거리면서 "출입금지" 표지판을 무시하고 위험한 숲길로 들어갔어요. 친구들이 들어가지 마라고 해도 듣지 않고, 돌아오라고 외쳐도 듣지 않고, 살고 싶으면 도망가라고 소리쳐도 듣지 않았어요. 그러다가 무시무시한 곰을 만나게 되고, 목숨이 위태로운 순간에 친구들의 도움으로 간신히 도망칠 수 있었지요.

여전히 버디는 말 많은 수다쟁이지만, 이제는 친구들이 말할 때 귀 기울일 줄 아는 배려심이 얼마나 중요한지 깨닫게 되었습니다.

Self-centered Wordy Birdy talks a lot, about everything ("This one time, I totally went swimming with a narwhal. My third cousin Barb is a penguin. REALLY! Do you think there is an award for Bird of the Year?…"). She doesn't listen to anyone, even when she should. On a walk through the deep woods she babbles along, ignoring every sign of danger (there are literal signs saying "danger"), the repeated warnings of her friends, and their sage advice such as "Run for your life!" When she finally comes face to face with a hungry bear, her friends come to the rescue and Wordy Birdy finally listens. Oh, she still talks a lot, but now "Sometimes, she likes to listen, too." Sauer's fun-to-read text and Mottram's detailed and hilarious illustrations seamlessly meld into a cohesive whole. The extensive use of word balloons, repeated questions ("Does Wordy Birdy listen?"), and characters who directly address readers make for an interactive read suitable for storytime and individual sharing.
