어렸을 적, 할아버지와의 추억. 숲속 길을 함께 걸으면서 많은 대화를 나누었지요. 주로 내가 질문을 하고 할아버지는 대답을 해주시곤 했어요. 어느날 나는 할아버지께 기도는 무엇이냐고 여쭤봤어요. 할아버지는 한동안 대답이 없으셨죠. 그리고 큰 나무 밑에 다달았을 때 할아버지는 나무 위를 보며 말씀하셨어요. "나무는 계속 자라서 높은 곳에 도달하도록 기도를 한단다. 돌, 개울물, 풀 한포기, 바람도 기도를 하지. 그리고 살아있는 모든 생물들도 기도를 한단다."
나는 또 여쭤 봤어요 "그럼 하나님은 이런한 기도들에 응답을 해주시나요?"
"대부분의 기도는 무엇을 바라고 하는 것이 아니란다. 살아있다는 것, 존재한다는 것 자체가 커다란 기쁨이고, 이러한 기쁨을 감사하는 마음으로 표현하는 것이 바로 기도가 아니겠니?"
솔직히 그 때는 할아버지의 말씀을 이해할 수가 없었어요. 돌을 주워 귀에 대봐도, 나무의 움직임에 귀를 기울여 봐도 기도소리는 들리지 않았죠.
어느날, 갑작스럽게 할아버지는 저 세상으로 가셨어요. 할아버지를 살려달라고 아무리 기도를 해도 아무런 응답이 없이, 할아버지는 다시는 돌아올 수 없는 먼 길을 가셨어요. 할아버지가 안계신 이 세상은 너무나도 어둡고 쓸쓸했지요.
시간이 흐른 후, 나는 할아버지와 함께 걷던 숲속으로 갔어요. 그리고 큰 나무 밑의 바위에 걸터 앉았습니다. 머리 위의 나무가지는 바람에 흔들리고, 즐겁게 들려오는 새들의 지저귐, 시냇물 흐르는 소리, 나뭇잎의 살랑거림.... 그 때 나는 뭔가 다른 것을 들을 수 있었어요. 바로 이들의 기도소리를... 시냇물과 새들, 나뭇잎과 산들바람이 하는 기도소리를...
"감사합니다" 나는 주위의 모든 사물과 살아 있는 생물들에 대해, 특히 할아버지에 대해 감사기도를 드렸어요.... 그리고, 할아버지는 먼 곳이 아니라 가까이에 계시다는 것을 느낄 수 있었어요.

Wood (Making the World, 1998, etc.) tackles the enormity of death and the meaning of prayer in a way that is both accessible and meaningful. A boy walks with his grandfather, who is his best friend. As they stroll through woods and past streams, the boy asks those questions that grandparents are on earth to answer``Why?'' ``What if?''and about prayers. Lucidly, the grandfather explains that trees ``pray'' as they reach for the sky, that waters pray, that the wind prays and sings at the same time. When people pray, ``a prayer is often its own answer.'' The grandfather dies, and the narrator finds it impossible to pray anymore; one day, when he is older, he discovers the woods again, and finds his own prayers. The deeply naturalistic watercolors portray the wild exquisitely, and the boy and grandfather are timelessly rendered in jeans, corduroys, and plaids. Some of the spreads are stunning: a close-up of the boy in the grass with a tiny clover in his fist, and only Grandad's knees visible; or a ground-level view, looking up, past the upturned faces of the pair to the sun shining through the trees above. This is a depiction of the spiritual that is without reference to a particular faith or tradition, and that doesn't lapse into greeting-card platitudes; Wood conveys a sense of something larger in the world, and gives voice to the human longing to understand. |
