Newbery 상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 문학책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 이 상은 18세기에 영국에서 세계 최초로 아동문학책을 출간하여 상업적으로 성공을 거둔 출판인 John Newbery의 업적을 기리기 위해 1922년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 아동문학 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

This Newbery winner's second picture book, after Samuel Todd's Book of Great Colors , again centers on her oldest grandchild. Here, the bespectacled Samuel muses on familiar items he considers worthwhile inventions. The genial child shares his views on the importance of mirrors, belt loops, Velcro, gloves, backpacks, training wheels, ladders, candles, boxes and Halloween. But to Samuel, the telephone and television are not particularly impressive inventions; rather, ``They come with the house like mothers and windows and fathers and walls.'' Kids and adults alike will appreciate the humor--and the truth--in Samuel's astute observations, which are likely to open young eyes to numerous ``great inventions'' they've hitherto taken for granted. Konigsburg's affection for her perspicacious grandson shines through her boldly colored paintings, effectively juxtaposed with smaller drawings that simulate black-and-white photos.

In this companion to Samuel Todd's Book of Great Colors the author's grandson notices common inventions that make a difference in his day: belt loops, Velcro, thermos bottles, boxes, training wheels, and so forth. While the artwork is undistinguished, the ideas in the text invite children to celebrate things we take for granted and to think of other inventions while considering how their lives are made easier by such things as step stools and french fries. The "invention" of the cuddle blankets is only depicted as used by little girls--maybe Sam doesn't know any boys who need them.

In this companion volume to Samuel Todd's Book of Great Colors (Atheneum, 1990), a boy offers random observations and appreciation of everyday things, from the marvel of mirrors to the ups and downs of belt loops and the advantages of Velcro. On the surface, the concept and the language are straightforward, but are presented with a sophistication that may be a bit confusing to young readers accustomed to concrete plot lines. For the most part, the musings themselves reflect a genuinely childlike perspective and are brilliant flashes of clarity that will provide fresh insight into one's surroundings.
