이야기 배경은 미국 서부 개척시대입니다. 죠세피나는 어린 소녀 Faith가 병아리일 때부터 키워왔던 암탉입니다. 이제는 너무 늙어서 알도 낳을 수 없고, 고기도 질겨서 먹을 수 없지요. 하지만 Faith는 죠세피나를 사랑하지요. Faith의 가족은 포장마차를 타고 대륙을 횡단해서 서부지역으로 이주하려고 합니다. 불필요한 물건은 모두 버려둔 채 조그만 포장마차를 수개월을 가야하는 고된 여정입니다. 온 가족의 반대를 물리치고 faith는 결국 죠세피나를 포장마차에 태울 수 있었지요. 여행 도중 죠세피나는 말썽을 부리기도 하지만 결국은 도둑들을 쫓아내는데 큰 공을 세우기도 합니다. 하지만 너무 나이가 든 죠세피나에게 대륙횡단 여행은 무리였나 봅니다. 목적지에 도착하기 전에 죠세피나는 세상을 떠나고, 온 가족은 그 암탉을 소나무 밑에 묻어줍니다. 목적지 캘리포니아에서 새로운 삶은 시작하게 된 Faith는 죠세피나와 함께했던 추억을 담은 Quilt(조각천 이불)를 완성합니다....
잔잔한 감동을 주는 재미있는 이야기가 쉽고 간결한 영어문장으로 수록되어 있으며, 이 책의 그림을 그린 Bruce Degen은 유명한 그림책 Jamberry의 작가입니다.
