이 책은 나이가 들어서 하루 종일 아무것도 하지 않는 개 "호머"의 이야기입니다. 이 책의 주인공인 호머는 하루종일 아무것도 하지 않고 포치에 앉아서 가족들과 다른 개들이 즐거운 시간을 보내는 것을 지켜만 봅니다. 아무 것도 하지 않기 대문에 이 책에는 극적인 스토리나 반전이 없습니다. 호머가 앉아 있는 것으로 시작해서 자는 것으로 끝납니다. 하지만 그럼에도 잔잔한 감동을 느끼게 해줍니다.
평생을 함께 해 온 가족들을 지켜보는 것만으로도 호머는 행복합니다. 그리고 가족들은 호머가 예전처럼 함께 바닷가를 뛰어다니거나 들판을 달리지도 못하지만, 그리고 함께 장을 보러가거나 산책을 하러 가지도 못하지만, 호머가 언제나 그 자리에 있는 것 만으로도 안심이 됩니다....

Book Description
An old dog sits on a porch looking out at a beach as other dogs in his family -- and the family’s children and parents -- head out for the day. Then he welcomes them back, and follows them inside. That’s it. For this story I drew on childhood animals (I had a dog named Homer), and a family house on Long Island Sound. I thought how sitting in one place and observing the world is not a bad place to be. Dogs don’t live long; they go from puppies to old dogs fast. But they are often the center around which a family orbits.
