국내에는 "내 친구 동글이"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 "Making a Friend"와 베스트셀러 그림책인 "A Child's First Book of Trump"를 비롯해서 다수의 어린이 그림책을 만든 마크 로젠탈이 정감 넘치는 클래식한 화풍으로 작은 제설차 월트의 활약을 재미있게 보여주는 Small Walt 시리즈입니다. 이 책에서는 제설차 월트와 견인차 모가 서로 힘을 합쳐서 곤경에 처한 차를 구해줍니다.

월트는 조그만 제설차입니다. 폭설이 내리던 날, 월트는 운전기사 거스와 한 팀이 되어서 눈을 치우기 위해 출발했습니다. 동네를 돌아다니면서 눈도 치우고 소금도 뿌렸습니다. 산 속 좁은 숲길로 들어갔을 때, 길은 이미 눈에 덮여 있었고, 살짝 얼기도 했습니다. 그런데 앞서 가던 차 한대가 눈길에 미끄러지면서 길 옆의 웅덩이에 처박히고 말았습니다. 월트는 자기가 그 차를 꺼낼 수 있다고 생각했습니다만, 거스는 웅덩이가 너무 깊어서 안된다고 하네요.

거스는 월트에게서 내려서 차가 박혀 있는 곳으로 간 후, 월트는 거스가 돌아오기를 계속 기다렸습니다. 하지만 거스는 좀처럼 모습을 보이지 않네요. 눈은 점점 많이 내리고, 무엇을 해야할지 몰라서 월트가 안절부절하고 있을 때, 멀리서 사이렌 소리가 들렸습니다. 거스가 견인차를 불렀네요. 견인차 모는 눈길을 뚫고 달려 와서 사고 차량을 끌어낼려고 했습니다만, 길가에 너무 많은 눈이 쌓여 있고, 살짝 얼어 있는 도로는 너무 미끄러워서 견인차 모의 바퀴는 헛돌기만 합니다.

월트는 모가 사고 차량을 잘 견인할 수 있도록 도와주기로 합니다. 우선 길가의 눈들을 모두 치워버리고, 얼어 있는 길이 녹도록 소금을 뿌렸습니다. 월트와 모가 힘을 합쳐서 드디어 사고 차량을 웅덩이에서 꺼내는데 성공하고...

Walt and his driver come across a little car that has slid right into a ditch! Walt’s driver gets out to help, and Mo the Tow shows up, too. Together with their drivers, Mo and Walt are able to pull and clear and the little green car home. This is the second entry about Walt, and it is a delightful addition to the many seasonal books that come out each winter. Particularly relevant to children who live in places where plow trucks and snowy weather are a regular occurrence. Rosenthal’s pencil illustrations give the book a classic touch. VERDICT A solid choice where snowy and winter picture books are relevant.
