유명한 전래 동화인 Three Little Pigs의 내용을 완전히 거꾸로 뒤집은 이 책에서는 늑대들은 약자로, 돼지는 악당으로 등장합니다. 늑대 3형제는 엄마의 유언으로 무서운 돼지로 부터 자신을 지킬 튼튼한 집을 짓습니다. 처음에는 튼튼한 벽돌집을 짓습니다만 못된 돼지는 햄머를 가져와서 집을 때려 부숩니다. 다음에는 콘크리트로 마치 요새와 같이 튼튼한 집을 짓습니다만, 이번에는 돼지가 바위를 깨트릴 수 있는 착암기를 가져와서 집을 다 때려 부숩니다. 간신히 도망을 친 가련한 늑대 3형제는 이번에야 말로 절대로 무너지지 않도록 철판으로 집을 짓고 둘레에는 철조망까지 칩니다만, 무자비한 돼지는 이번에는 다이너마이트를 가져와서 무쇠집까지 부숴 버리네요. 더 이상 튼튼한 집을 지을 수 없게 된 늑대 3형제가 마지막으로 지은 집은, 이번에야 말로 훅 불면 쓰러질 것 같은 집입니다만... 마지막에는 허를 찌르는 반전과 해피엔딩이 기다립니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

In a clever switch on the familiar counterparts, these sweet-faced innocents use brick, concrete, and steel constructions, but their nemesis is not called big and bad for nothing. With sledgehammer, pneumatic drill, and dynamite, the pig wrecks each structure. ``Something must be wrong with our building materials,'' the wolves muse. Their final house is build from flowers, insubstantial yet beautiful. It is their lovely scent that causes the pig to change his nasty ways and all live together as friends happily ever after. The text has the repeating situations and phrases from the traditional version. Oxenbury's pastel watercolor illustrations combine the coziness of a nursery tale with tongue-in-cheek humor. They are animated and full of personality. Children familiar with The Three Little Pigs will enjoy the turnabout, the narrow escapes, and the harmonious ending. This may also be used to inspire them to develop their own adaptations of classic tales. |
