구 소련에는 1922년에 창설된 Young Pioneers라는 청소년 단체가 있었습니다. 거의 대부분의 학생들이 가입하는 단체이며, 스탈린 동지에게 헌신하고 공산당과 공산주의를 위해 충성을 다바치는 이념을 어릴 때부터 몽에 베일 수 있도록 하는 것을 목적으로 하는 조직이었습니다. 이 책의 주인공인 10살 소년 사샤도 이 단체에 가입하는 날이 되었습니다. 사샤가 그토록 원했던 Young Pioneers에 가입하는 날, 본의 아니게 눈덩이로 친구의 안경을 부수는가 하면, 복도에 있는 스탈린 흉상을 파손하는 사고를 저지르고 맙니다. 더욱 최악인 것은 아마도 가장 신념이 강한 공산주의자였던 아빠가 지난 밤에 체포되는 일이 벌어졌지요....

독재 공산체제하에서 살았던 10살 소년 사샤가 그동안 알고 있었던 진실과 이념이 얼마나 허위와 기만으로 가득차 있는지를 깨달아 가는 과정을 감동적으로 풀어나간 명작입니다.

What is 페이퍼백? 표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.
