TV를 틀면 온 세상에서 분노와 증오가 넘쳐나는 뉴스들이 흘러나옵니다. 사람들은 두려움과 불신에 빠져서 집밖은 위험하다고 생각하고, 서로가 서로를 의심하며 지내지요. 뉴스를 보던 소녀는 아빠에게 이 세상을 좀 더 좋은 곳으로 만들기 위해서 자신이 할 수 있는 일이 무엇이 있는지 물어봅니다. 아빠는 "나와 함께 가자"고 말한 뒤, 딸의 손을 잡고 지하철을 타러 갑니다. 그리고 비록 모르는 사람이더라도 만나는 사람에게 모자를 가볍게 들어 올리면서 인사를 합니다. 소녀도 아빠를 따라 했지요.

소녀는 이번에는 엄마에게 이 세상을 좀 더 좋은 곳으로 만들기 위해서 자신이 할 수 있는 일이 무엇이 있는지 물어봅니다. 엄마는 "나와 함께 가자"고 말한 뒤, 딸의 손을 잡고 시장으로 갑니다. 그곳에는 전 세계 여러지역의 식재료를 파는 마트가 있었고 사람들은 인종이나 피부색과 관계없이 서로 어울리며 지내고 있었지요.

식사 시간에 소녀는 아빠와 엄마에게 자신이 스스로 혼자서 뭔가를 해보고 싶다고 말합니다. 그것은 바로 강아지를 산책시키는 일.
엄마와 아빠는 서로 눈치를 보다가 딸에게 허락해 줍니다. 그리고 이제는 두려움 속에서 살지 않을거라는 메세지를 세상에 전하라고 격려해 줍니다.

강아지를 끌고 나가던 소녀는 앞집에 사는 흑인 소년을 만나게 되고, 둘은 함께 강아지를 산책시키기로 합니다. 용감하고, 부드러우면서도 강하고, 친절함을 지니며 함께 나아가는 것이 이 세상을 좀더 좋은 곳으로 만드는 첫걸음이라는 것을 깨닫습니다.

공원에 도착한 소녀와 소년은 다른 아이와 함께 바닥에 분필로 꽃과 무지개가 가득한 아름다운 그림을 그립니다. 이 모습을 본 다른 아이들도 그림 그리기에 함께 참여하고...
