What is 뉴베리상? Newbery 상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 문학책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 이 상은 18세기에 영국에서 세계 최초로 아동문학책을 출간하여 상업적으로 성공을 거둔 출판인 John Newbery의 업적을 기리기 위해 1922년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 아동문학 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

뉴베리상을 받은 제니퍼 촐덴코(글)와 "Adventures of Beekle"로 Caldecott상을 받은 댄 샌탯(그림), 두 거장의 드림팀이 힘을 합쳐 만든 명작그림책입니다.

니콜라스는 겁이 많습니다. 어둠이 내리면 집 밖에 나가기가 두렵고, 수풀 속에는 무시무시한 큰 벌레가 있을 것 같고, 맨홀뚜껑 아래에도 괴물들이 살고 있을 것 같아서 무서워합니다.

그에 반해, 아빠는 어두운 밤에 혼자 나가서 망원경으로 별들을 관찰하는 등 두려움이 없는 것 같이 보였지요.

하지만 니콜라스는 조그만 티라노 공룡모형을 손에 쥐거나 몸에 지니고 있으면 두려움이 사라지고 용감해집니다. 왜냐하면 공룡은 이 세상에서 가장 힘이 쎈 무적의 존재이기 때문입니다.

공룡모형을 몸에 지니면 인공암벽 등반도 할 수 있고, 물 속 수영도 할 수 있고, 축구시합을 할 때는 별명이 고릴라인 지닌 무시무시한 골키퍼가 지키고 있어도 용감하게 슛을 하고 골을 넣었습니다.

그런데 축구시합이 끝난 후 니콜라스는 양말 속에 넣어두었던 공룡모형이 사라진 것을 알게 됩니다. 니콜라스는 다시 두려움이 밀려와서 잠 잘 때도 불을 켜고 자지만 무서운 악몽에 시달립니다.

아빠는 니콜라스가 악몽을 꾸는 것을 보고는 어른들도 무서운 것이 있다며 니콜라스를 달래줍니다. 니콜라스는 그동안 두려움에 맞설 수 있었던 것은 공룡 모형 덕이었는데, 축구시합 도중에 잃어버렸다고 아빠에게 사실대로 말합니다. 아빠는 함께 공룡 모형을 찾아 보자며 한 밤중에 차를 몰고 니콜라스와 함께 축구장으로 갑니다. 그리고 헤드라이트를 켜고 운동장을 샅샅이 살피다가 마침내 잃어버렸던 공룡 모형을 발견하게 되고...

A heartwarming father-son story about bravery and facing fears.

Nicholas was afraid of the dark outside his door, the bushes where the giant bugs live, and the underside of manhole covers.
His dad was not afraid of anything.
Nicholas wants to be as brave as his dad, but he needs help. That’s why he needs a dinosaur. After all, dinosaurs like the dark, bugs are nothing to them, and they eat manhole covers for lunch (and everything under them for dinner).
With his toy dinosaur, Nicholas can scale tall walls, swim in deep water, even score a goal against the huge goalie everyone calls Gorilla. But when the dinosaur goes missing, everything is scary again.
Luckily, his dad knows that even the bravest people can get scared, and it’s okay to ask for help facing your fears. It’s just guy stuff.

Nick is afraid of many things: giant bugs, the dark, manhole covers, and what lies beneath them. He longs to be brave like his dad. "His dad was not afraid of anything." Fortunately, Nick has a plastic dinosaur talisman that makes him fearless. When the dinosaur is safely in his pocket or tucked inside his soccer socks, Nick scales rock walls and scores amazing goals. Once the dinosaur is lost, however, Nick is filled with uncertainty and dread: "The night was as black as octopus ink, giant bugs were everywhere." After Nick confesses to his father that the dinosaur is the brave one, not him, he and Dad head out to search one more time. The toy is recovered, and Nick is relieved, especially after being reassured by his dad that "it's okay to be afraid. All guys are now and then." The mixed-media artwork by Caldecott winner Santat is sumptuous and full bleed. The nighttime scenes are particularly evocative, with Nick's imagined fears lurking around the edges. Slyly humorous as well as spooky, they keep the mood from getting too scary. This is a modern story reminiscent of Dumbo and his "magic" feather that readers will enjoy as they explore the ideas of bravery, ability, and what lies inside each of us. VERDICT A winning book sure to attract and delight a wide audience.
