King Bidgood's in the bathtub

King of the land that's who I am
King of the land isn¡¯t it grand
Whatever I bid, I bid is good, and now a bath
A bath sounds good
La la ..... Oh Page!

I'm in the tub and I want to play
Bring me toys to master the day
And I never get out it's so much fun
Where are you, Page? Hurry now run
La la....

I'm coming with water fresh heated for you
When you're in the bathtub there's so much to do
And I'll bring you bath toys yes I hear you shout
But King won't you tell me when will you get out

Bubbles and steam see how they rise
They tickle my nose as they float by
A day in the bath, a day in the tub
That's what I'll have rub-a-dub-dub
La la....

¡°Help! Help!¡± cried the Page when the sun came up
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out
Oh, who knows what to do?

Oh, who knows what to do?
When the king's in the tub and he never is through
There is so many things for me to do
Who knows what to do?

¡°I do!¡± cried the Knight when the sun came up.
¡°Get out! It's time to battle!¡±

Boom boom boom boom(*4)
Boom ba-ba-boom-ba-boom-ba boom.
There's early morning light
Boom ba-ba-boom-ba-boom-ba boom.
The time has come to fight
Get out. It's time to battle
Can't you see the sun is up
Come my King
You've got to get out of the tub
Ships are waiting in the harbor
Cannons "Boom" salute
The peoples calling you to battle
King comes lead the troops
Boom boom boom boom *4)
Boom ba-ba-boom-ba-boom-ba boom
I've been expecting you
The battle plan is well in hand
I'll lead the Red, you lead the Blue
You're right, it's time to battle
Let's raise the banners up

Come in / Come in?

Today we battle in the tub

We battle in the tub???

Troops are marching
with cannons rolling
The battle has begun
My ships are sailing
Yours are sinking
The fortress has been won

Drip, drip, drop, splash (*4)
Drip, drop, splash (*2)

My armour soon will rust
My uniform is soggy wet
My helmet plume is must
How can I win a battle in water, soap, and suds
I can't believe I'm sitting in this tub
My ships go under, it's no wonder
You sink them with your hand
You are winning, I am retreating
King you're in command

Drip, drop, splash (*2)
Now soap got in my eye
I cannot see
How can I lead soldiers only inches high
I'm getting out of this battle
I¡¯ve lost. I'm giving up. I can't get the king out of the tub

¡°Help! Help!¡± cried the Page when the sun got hot
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out

Oh, who knows what to do?
Oh, who knows what to do?

I've cleaned the floor of water and toys
It's so much work for a little boy
Who knows what to do?

¡°I do!¡± cried the Queen when the sun got hot.
¡°Get out! It's time to lunch!¡±

My king, you're the leader and chosen to reign
You cannot just sit there and play watergames
What will they say?
The King's gone insane
Will you please get out of the tub?

Get out! Get out! Get out of the tub.

Our friends are all waiting
Oh, what a shame!
I've had quite enough of this silly game
This isn't funny. Your joke is now up
I insist you get out of the tub

Get out, get out, get out of the tub

Did you say lunch? / Yes, I said lunch.

I smell the cupcakes, the honey and yams
I want lunch
You want lunch
I'm feeling hungry, you know that I am
Time for lunch

The king wants lunch

So come in

What??? Come in???

Today we lunch in the tub

Oh, a tubful of food, oh look at this mess
My gown is all wet. It's a parachute dress
And the cake was a true work of art
But you spoiled our lunch from the start

Lunch, lunch, lunch in the tub
Marzipan statues, marshmallow sheets
Turkey and dressing they simply won't keep
Creamy plum pudding made delicately
Luncheon is not for the tub, don't you see?

Lunch, lunch, lunch in the tub

A candle light lunch
with flowers and fruits and cookies piled high
What a lunch (*2)
Dear have a drumstick or do you want pie
What a lunch (*2)

Oh, I planned jelly and bread and cinnamon pastry
Hints and sweet herbs potatoes and gravy
Now lunch is disaster, the party's a flop
sometimes I doubt that you'll ever grow up

¡°Help! Help!¡± cried the Page when the sun sank low
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out
Oh, who knows what to do?

Oh, who knows what to do?
The plates are piled up ten feet high
Now I will have to wash and dry
Who knows what to do?

¡°I do!¡± cried the Duke when the sun sank low.
¡°Get out! It's time to fish!¡±

The sun is sinking, a great time to fish
The servants await your royal wish
I'd like to suggest that if you go out we can go fishing,
Fishing for trout
King get out (*2)

Just take a towel, dry off and we'll go
Off to the river, Oh King don't be slow
You don't even need to dirty your hands

The servants will do all the work you command
King getout (*2)

They're waiting with royal worms on the line
They'll do all the work while we recline
Now sire! my deepest wish is to go with you for a sunset fish
King get out (*2)

Trout, trout, trout
Fishing sounds like fun

Oh, yes!

We always catch a lot in the setting sun

Let's go

So grab your pole and bring the line come in

What???

Today we fish in the tub

Oh, no....

In the tub

Must I put this worm on the hook?
It's wiggling, squirming, I can't bear to look
and heavy frills on my coat or a flap
There are bugs in the air, a frog on my hat
What'll we do?(*2)

Ducks in the water, birds in the reeds
Big fish with eyes staring at me,
Frogs on the lilypad, worms in a jar
My king its too much you've gone too far
What'll we do?(*2)

I can't share the tub with snails and trout
Something just bit me
I'm getting out

¡°Help! Help!¡± cried the Page when the night got dark
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out
Oh, who knows what to do?
Oh, who knows what to do?
I've got fish in the basket on my back
If this goes on I know I'll crack
Who knows what to do?

¡°We do!¡± cried the Court when the night got dark.
Get out for the Masquerade Ball

Dance, dance, come dance through the night
Dancing is fun and it makes you feel light (*3)

I'll be a flower with a butterfly
I'll be the jester you'll laugh until you cry
I'm wearing my ship's hat, my favorite costume
Everyone's waiting down in the Ballroom

Jig, jig, jig, a Masquerade Ball
A splendid idea what fun for us all
Jig, jig, jig, a Masquerade Ball (*2)
Who could resist a Masquerade Ball
The King says he wants a Masquerade Ball

So come in!

What??? Come in???

Tonight we dance in the tub
Tonight we dance in the tub?

Ouch, ouch, oh, no.
You stepped on my toe, and water's splashing everywhere
I'm wet, I'm drenched, I'm soaked to the bone
There isn't any room to spare

Catch me, I'm falling. Where's my shoe?
What is that beneath me? Is it you?
You're standing on my back I cannot move
Who can help us what'll we do

My horn is blowing bubbles for a tune
My lute is going flat I think it's ruined.

And look at all the water on the floor.
I don't think that I can take it any more

Help! Help! Oh, help somebody help
Does anyone know what to do?
Help! Help! Oh help somebody help
Think of something bright and new
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out
Oh who knows what to do, who knows what to do?

¡°Help! Help! Cried the Court when the moon shone bright.
King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out
Oh who knows what to do, who knows what to do?

¡°I do!¡± said the Page when the moon shone bright,
and then he pulled the plug. Glub, glub, glub

Oh, I knew what to do
King's out of the tub his bath is through
There's nothing more I have to do
I knew what to do

The knight in his armour asked the King to come along
to lead the troops to battle
Yet his plans went all wrong

But, I knew what to do
King's out of the tub his bath is through
There's nothing more I have to do
I knew what to do

The queen couldn't get him out
She begged and cried and whined
He had her come into the bath
and in the tub they dinned

But, I knew what to do
King's out of the tub his bath is through
There's nothing more I have to do
I knew what to do

The duke asked the King to fish
when the sun sank low
But just like the others he got soaked from head to toe

But, I knew what to do
King's out of the tub his bath is through
There's nothing more I have to do
I knew what to do
The court all in costume said
get out for the Masquerade Ball
But soon he had them in the tub dancing one and all

But the Page knew what to do
King's out of the tub his bath is through
There's nothing more we have to do
he Page knew what to do
The Page knew what to do!

The New York Times Book Review
Audrey and Don Wood seem to enjoy their work. In their book 'The NappingHouse' {BRD 1985} and in this latest creation they express an exuberance thatis quite infectious. . . . The bathtub scenes are clearly the most fun, so that when the Page, as hero, puts an end to the merriment (and does it in a rather lackluster manner)--we're disappointed. Instead of cheering the Page for his resourcefulness, we resent him. Another element disturbed me. All the characters are painted to look as if they are overacting. In a farce, even a broad farce, such elaboration is deadly. Combined with language like 'glub, glub, glub' or 'yum, yum, yum' one senses a failure to be truthful to the lighthearted nature of the story.

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
The story is rhythmically told with a few lines to each page and an imaginative assortment of detail in double-spread oil paintings dominated by purple and blue. Perhaps the fishing scene is most memorable, with trout arching over waterlilies and a perplexed duke struggling with hook and worm. Some tub.

The Reader's Catalog
The court must persuade stubborn King Bidgood to leave his much-too- comfortable and luxurious bathtub. Caldecott Honor Book 1987

Ingram
This rollicking tale is the story of an unruly king who refuses to leave his bathtub and attend to his duties. One by one, the knight, the queen, the duke, and all the members of the court attempt to persuade the King to leave his bath. At last, the clever pig saves the day. Caldecott Honor Book.
