자식에 대한 아빠의 사랑이 듬뿍 담긴 책입니다. 어른들도 이 책을 읽으면 자신도 모르게 미소짓게 되지요.
Pete는 비 때문에 친구들과 약속한 공놀이를 하지 못하게 되자 시무룩해 합니다. 이를 본 아빠는 피트의 마음을 풀어주기로 마음먹습니다. 피트를 피자로 만들기로 한 것이죠. 피트를 번쩍들어 조리 테이블에 눕히고는 피트몸을 밀가루 덩어리인 것 처럼 반죽하듯 주무릅니다. 그리고 반죽을 늘리듯 피트 다리를 번갈아가면서 쭉쭉 잡아당기지요. 그리고는 반죽을 돌리듯 피트를 공중에서 빙글빙글 돌립니다. 올리브 기름(실제로는 물)을 듬뿍 바르고, 밀가루도 뿌리고, 온갖 토핑을 뿌립니다.... 피트가 너무너무 재미있어 합니다.

판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

When Pete is in an especially bad mood because it is raining and he can't play ball with his friends, his father decides that it might cheer his son up "to be made into a pizza." The boy is placed on the kitchen table where he is kneaded, tossed, and covered with various toppings including oil (water), tomatoes (checkers), and cheese (pieces of paper). His mother comments that she doesn't like tomatoes, eliciting some giggles from Pete. He is then placed in the oven (the couch) and eventually returned to the table to be sliced. At this juncture, he runs away and is pursued by his father who captures and hugs him. By now the sun is shining and Pete goes outside to look for his friends. The interplay between father and son is both entertaining and endearing. The man says, after tickling Pete, "Pizzas are not supposed to laugh!" and Pete responds, "Pizza-makers are not supposed to tickle their pizzas!" Steig's spare line drawings and zany watercolor paintings are centered against a large white background. The wry text is printed in all capital letters, making it look almost like a recipe. Pete is in a bad mood because it's raining and he can't play outside with his friends. His dad decides to cheer him up by making him into a pizza. He kneads him, tosses him in the air, puts oil, cheese, and tomatoes on him, and bakes him in the oven (really the sofa). By this time, Pete is full of giggles, and the sun has begun to shine again. A delightful book for a young child with the rainy day blues+taking turns being the pizza and the pizza-maker is a perfect parent-child activity. Steig based this book on a game he used to play with his own daughter many years ago.

When Pete, a boy of six or so, sulks because "it decides to rain" just when he's supposed to play ball with the buys, his father improvises a most unexpected way to cheer his son up: he decides to make Pete into a pizza. Yes, that's right - a pizza. In a lesser artist's hands, such an antic notion might have fallen flat. But we are more than willing to suspend our disbelieve, as we watch Steig's two solid, earthbound parents join in the make-believe kneading, stretching, twisting in the air... |
