Book Description
Toys, like children, sometimes get hurt, and Helen Cooper lets readers know how they feel when it happens in this charming book of four stories. Tim's favorite playthings are a teddy bear, a stuffed frog, a duck on wheels, and a piggy bank, and each of them has a trauma to endure. Bear inadvertently ends up in the washing machine. Frog loses all his stuffing one night. Duck has a bit of a crash, as does Pig, who's knocked off his shelf. But each toy recovers from his injury and is no less loved by Tim, even if, in some cases, they look a little worse for wear. This generous picture book, cozily illustrated by Helen Cooper, maintains a rhythmic storytelling pace through all eighty pages, and will be meaningful to any child who's ever broken a toy (is there one who hasn't?).

Even after they each have a mishap, a young boy still loves his special teddy bear, stuffed frog, wooden duck, and piggy bank.

Four previously published picture books are bound together as one, each story telling about Tim's toy animals. Bear gets a washing and is afraid that Tim won't love the cleaned-up version; Frog loses his rice stuffing to mice; Duck zooms down the stairs and breaks; and prideful Pig's tummy is no longer full of money when it breaks, but Tim can now play with the Pig who's useless as a bank. The gentle stories suit a preschooler's suspicions that toys talk and have feelings—they are reassuring in their statements of enduring love despite changes in appearance. Cooper's paintings involve the whole page and show movement by the use of frames broken.
