1994년 Caldecott상 수상작인 In the Small, Small Pond의 저자인 Denise Fleming의 그림책입니다. 1~10까지의 숫자와 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 까지 10을 단위로 끊어지는 숫자에 대해 배울 수 있습니다.
숫자 하나마다 한 종류의 동물이 등장합니다. 1에는 1마리의 영양, 2에는 2마리의 얼룩말... 20에는 20마리의 나비들, 30에는 30마리의 달팽이들, 40에는 40마리의 개구리들, 50에는 50마리의 벌떼가 나와서 숫자의 개념을 익히는데 도움을 줍니다. 선이 굵은 펄프를 염색해서 그린 각종 동물들의 그림이 매우 독특한 느낌을 주며 글씨도 굵은 활자체로 되어 있습니다.
먼저 1에서 10까지의 숫자를 숙지한 후 20, 30, 40, 50의 숫자도 추가로 배울 수 있습니다. 책에는 나오지 않지만 1~10까지의 숫자를 응용해서 11, 12, 13.....25, 26, 27.....48, 49, 50까지의 숫자 카운트도 활용할 수 있습니다.

표지가 두꺼운 판지나 보드지가 아닌 비교적 얇은 종이를 사용해서 만든 책이며, 실박음질 대신에 풀로 제본처리하는 경우가 많습니다. 일반적으로 하드커버나 보드북에 비해서 가격이 저렴합니다. 소프트커버로 불리우기도 합니다. 책의 이음새 부분이 접히거나 휘는 내구성이 그리 좋지는 않은 책입니다.

Fuchsias and oranges, teals and purples roll over the pages blending into each other in Fleming's beautiful couched paper with handcut-stencil illustrations. Her explosions of color and motion are captivating and energizing. When the text says, ``Wiggle, worms!,'' readers can see them slithering right off the page. Double-page spreads feature numbers from 1 to 10, as well as 20, 30, 40, and 50. Each includes its numeral and word in English, slashes representing its quantity, and countable creatures along with a brief salutation or command, such as ``Line up, lizards!'' or ``Stretch, giraffes!'' The more children who Count! under the influence of this title's breezy mood, the better. Very bright, very hip!

The substance here is traditional--numbers from one to ten introduced with animals to count; the idea extended with tens to 50--but the presentation is outstanding. Like the art in Fleming's eye-catching In the Tall, Tall Grass (1991), these illustrations are rendered in a unique medium using colored pulp from which she creates her own handmade paper. In the collage- like result, there are both areas of subtly modulated color with cloud-like edges and the crisper definitions of cut paper. The brilliant tones and bold juxtapositions will nourish the imaginations of babies too young for the number concepts; the handsome design and exquisite balance of vibrant colors will make the book a favorite until the child is old enough to consider the final appealing spread with the numeral ``50,'' the words ``fifty bees,'' 50 marks grouped in tens, and 50 stylized bees headed up and away. Fashioned with care, intelligence, and artistry--a delight.
