애니는 눈 속에 파묻힌 외딴 집에서 고양이 태피와 단둘이 살고 있습니다. 어느날 태피는 놀지도 않고 하루종일 잠만 자는 등 이상한 변화를 보이더니 결국 집을 나가서는 영영 사라지고 말았습니다. 태피가 없어지자 너무나 외로운 애니는 애완동물을 새로 얻기 위해 매일 저녁마다 숲 가장자리에 옥수수 케익을 갖다 놓았습니다. 하지만 케익을 먹기 위해 나타난 동물은 커다란 무스, 사나운 살쾡이, 으르렁거리는 곰 등 집에서는 애완용으로 키울 수 없는 동물들만 나타났지요. 마침내 옥수수케익을 만들 재료도 다 떨어지고 더 이상 애완동물을 구할 방법이 없어져서 슬픔에 빠져 있는 애니에게 사라졌던 태피가 나타납니다. 그것도 귀여운 세마리의 새끼를 데리고서...
