부모님이 외출하신 후 집을 지키게 된 피터와 주디는 우연히 나무의 낙엽 밑에서 Jumanji라는 주사위 놀이판을 발견하게 됩니다. 놀이규칙은 주사위를 던져서 나오는 숫자만큼 놀이판 위의 길을 따라 말을 앞으로 이동시키는 간단한 게임입니다만, 막상 놀이를 시작하자 쥬디와 피터가 상상도 하지 못했던 엄청난 일들이 일어나기 시작합니다. 놀이판의 말이 놓여질 자리마다 있는 글귀대로 모든 것이 현실이 되어 나타나는 것이었죠. 피터가 주사위를 던지고 말을 놓았을 때 그 자리에쓰여진 글귀는 "Lion Attacks"였는데 실제 사자가 나타나서 피터를 공격합니다.... 뱀, 원숭이, 코뿔소, 열대 소나기, 잠자는 병, 화산 등 온갖 모험을 겪으면서 마침내 쥬디와 피터는 놀이판의 최종 목적지에 도착하게 되고...

The dynamic combination of master author/ illustrator Chris Van Allsburg and master of voices Robin Williams produces a delightful, but unexpected, audio program. Williams keeps his narration low-key and doesn't haul out character voices as listeners might expect. The consequences of two children playing an unusual board game, Jumanji, give the narrator and the audio producers great material. Williams coveys the perfect level of horrified anticipation with each roll of the dice. The events have all the high-stakes action and calamity one would expect, and Williams wisely takes a restrained roll as storyteller. The music, scored by Michael Moss, is fabulous, with great jungle sounds and a strong theme throughout. The balance between Williams's narration and the musical score is perfect. Williams's narration brings out a subtle humor, which is overshadowed in print by Van Allsburg's starkly haunting illustrations.
