Jeffers's (Three Jovial Huntsmen) own longing for a horse as a youngster and her childhood love of drawing horses infuses this tale with a palpable authenticity. "I want a pony. I want a pony more than anything else in the world," the likable young narrator begins. Whenever she asks her parents for one, they respond negatively, so the child creates a horse of her own. "I call her Silver. She has dapples and a shiny coat. When I draw her, it is as if she comes alive," she notes, while a translucent white horse watches over her as she paints. A turn of the page reveals the child soaring out of the window into the night sky on the animal's back. Pastel hues dominate the pleasing palette of Jeffers's artwork, which moves easily between homespun real scenes of the 1950s and incandescent dream sequences. By the shimmering moonlight, the two ride through pine boughs that resemble diamonds into a forest of candy- and carrot-bearing trees. They encounter a herd of other horses, which joins them as they gallop through a mountain stream and "flash like a comet across the sky" before returning home to the girl's drawing table. In a dramatic closing portrait, the horse seems to peer out at readers "Silver waits just outside my window. Always." A gentle paean to these awe-inspiring animals and to the power of imagination.

"I want a pony more than anything else in the world," says our young heroine, echoing the yearning of so many girls. And like the parents of those girls, her mother and father remind her that ponies cost too much, and where would they put one? But in her dreams, she rides her pony Silver up into the sky, through the woods in the magical moonlight, with other horses on the ground and through the clouds. She knows she cannot have a real pony, but in her imagination "Silver waits just outside my window. Always." Although Jeffers's naturalistic colored illustrations adequately depict the appealing narrator and her parents, we are particularly struck by a more impassioned involvement with the horses. When the artist creates the horses' images, a convincing sense of spirituality fills the scenes. We can sense the galloping legs and tossing manes. An Author's Note explains Jeffers' passionate wish for a horse and its possible relevance to her life in art. From the emotion-laden jacket of the girl hugging the horse and continuing on, this book should engage empathizing horse-lovers.

The pigtailed narrator of this enchanting story wants a pony of her own. Her parents tell her that a horse is too expensive and that they don't have enough room, so she draws pictures of a horse. Her art takes her to a magical world where she rides a beautiful, dappled silver horse through forests and clouds. When she returns from her journey, she is happy because her imaginary animal "waits just outside my window. Always." In an author's note, Jeffers tells how her own longing for a horse led her to drawing. The sense of longing permeates the spare text but is softened by the beautiful, pastel watercolor-and-ink artwork. The dreamlike quality of the semitransparent horses and of the fantastic backgrounds is heightened by glossy ivory paper. This is a book that horse lovers will cherish. |

제가 말을 정말 좋아해서 샀는데...
아들은 별로인가 봅니다.
Susan Jeffers의 책들을 대체로 안 좋아하네요.
하지만, 부드럽고 감성적인 글과 그림이 제게는 딱이네요.
그림이 실사에 가깝게 정교하고, 색감..
제가 말을 정말 좋아해서 샀는데...
아들은 별로인가 봅니다.
Susan Jeffers의 책들을 대체로 안 좋아하네요.
하지만, 부드럽고 감성적인 글과 그림이 제게는 딱이네요.
그림이 실사에 가깝게 정교하고, 색감도 부드럽고 펄이 약간 들어가 환상적인 분위기 마저 연출합니다.
내용도 하룻밤의 환상적인 꿈(?)을 꾸듯 내내 꿈꾸는 듯한 분위기 이구요.
요즘 유머러스한 내용만 좋아라 편식하는 아들이 이 책을 좀 봐줬으면 하는 바램이 있네요.
안타깝기는 하지만 소장용으로도 추천입니다.
여자아이들은 이 책 정말 좋아할 것 같아요.
