What is 뉴베리상? Newbery 상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 문학책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 이 상은 18세기에 영국에서 세계 최초로 아동문학책을 출간하여 상업적으로 성공을 거둔 출판인 John Newbery의 업적을 기리기 위해 1922년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 아동문학 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

뉴베리상을 수상했던 현 시대 최고의 청소년 문학 작가 중 한 명인 Jack Gantos의 최신작입니다.

주인공은 12세 소년 잭 갠토스(작가 이름과 같네요). 사는 곳은 펜실베니아주 노벨트. 이 곳은 1930년대 대공황 시절에 루즈벨트 대통령의 뉴딜 정책의 일환으로 만들어진 도시이며 도시 이름 Norvelt는 영부인인 Eleanor Roosevelt의 끝자리를 따서 만들었다고 합니다.

이제는 활기를 잃은 쇠락한 지역이 된 노벨트에는 전통을 지켜려는 사람들과 새로운 삶을 찾아 다른 지역으로 떠나거나 뭔가를 바꿔보려눈 사람들이 함께 살고 있습니다. 툭하면 코피를 흘리는 잭은 옥수수밭을 밀어버리고 아빠의 총기를 발사하는 사고를 치는 바람에 벌로 외출 금지를 당하고, 방학동안 이웃에 사는 볼커 할머니의 일을 도와주는 일을 하게 됩니다. 볼커할머니는 이 지역에서 죽은 사람들을 위해 정성껏 부고를 쓰는 일을 하는데 관절염 때문에 손이 불편해서 잭이 부고를 쓰는 일을 도와주게 됩니다.

총 28개의 챕터로 되어 있습니다만, 각각의 챕터가 별도의 에피소드를 갖고 있는 단편소설과 같이 구성되어 있지만 전체적으로 28개 챕터가 연결되면서 하나의 스토리를 완성해 갑니다.

잭과 볼커할머니를 중심인물로 해서 이야기가 전개되며, 미국에서 실제로 발생했던 과거 역사들을 바탕에 깔고 있어서 독자들에게 색다른 재미를 주며, 유머와 감동을 느낄 수 있는 내용입니다
