[ 책 소개 ]

아름다운 세밀화 그림으로 유명한 Jan Brett의 그림책 중에서도 one of her most beautiful picture books으로 꼽히는 책입니다. 작가인 Jan Brett이 남편과 함께 이 책의 배경이 된 캐나다 북쪽의 북극지방을 여행한 후에 깊은 감명을 받고 만든 책이라고 합니다. 전래 동화인 Goldilocks And The Three Bears의 이야기를 토대로 해서, 북극지방을 배경으로 새롭게 재구성한 책입니다.

이누이트족(우리에게는 에스키모족으로 알려져 있습니다) 소녀인 알루키는 개썰매를 타고 낚시를 하러 왔다가 그만 얼음이 깨지는 바람에 개들이 얼음조각 위에서 오도가도 못하고 멀리 흘러가 버리고 말았습니다. 개를 찾기 위해 돌아다니던 알루키는 커다란 이글루(얼음집)을 발견했습니다. 얼음집 안으로 들어간 알루키는 맛있는 스프가 담긴 3개의 그릇을 발견하고는 큰 그릇에 담긴 스프부터 맛을 봅니다. 큰 그릇에 담기 스프는 너무 뜨겁고, 중간 그릇에 담긴 스프는 너무 차가왔으며, 제일 작은 그릇에 담긴 스프는 온도가 적당해서 모두 마셔버렸습니다. 옆방에서는 세켤레 부츠를 차례로 신어본 후 가장 마음에 드는 작은 부츠를 신었으며, 끝 방에 가서는 침상 벤치에 놓여 있는 3개의 잠자리 중에서 가장 안락한 조그만 털담요 속으로 들어가서 깊은 잠에 빠졌습니다.

한편, 뜨거운 수프를 식히기 위해 잠깐 산보를 나왔던 북극곰 가족은 유빙 위에서 표류를 하고 있던 썰매개들을 발견하고는 바닷물 속으로 뛰어들어서 개들을 구해줍니다. 개들과 함께 얼음집으로 돌아온 북극곰 가족은 누군가 집 안에 들어 와서 자신들의 수프를 먹고, 부츠를 신어 본 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그리고 아기곰의 잠자리에서 자고있는 알루키를 발견하고는....

각 페이지의 좌측과 우측에 있는 매듭 안의 조그만 그림들은 알루키, 북극곰 가족, 썰매개가 각각 무엇을 하는지를 보여주기 때문에 이야기의 흐름을 입체적으로 파악할 수 있습니다.

Jan Brett's board book audience will love this brief version of a favorite tale in which Aloo-ki, an Inuit girl, meets a polar bear family.
When Aloo-ki's sled dogs float away on an ice floe, she goes looking for them. She comes upon an igloo with no one home and goes inside. In the meantime, Mama, Papa and Baby Bear swim out and rescue Aloo-ki's dogs. They all go home for breakfast to find a surprise visitor curled up in Baby Bear's bed for a nap.

Brett travels to the Arctic to bring us her variation of the Goldilocks story. Aloo-ki is the young heroine here. Her dog team floats away from her at the same time that the bear family decides to take a walk while their hot soup cools. Aloo-ki arrives at their igloo, and the traditional tale unfolds. First, she tries the three bowls of soup and finishes the smallest. Then, she tries on three pairs of boots, finding the littlest to be "just right." Finally, feeling sleepy, she ends by taking a nap on the smallest place on the sleeping bench. Meanwhile, along the sides of the pages, the bears have been having visual adventures of their own. Back into the main story they now come, pushing Aloo-ki's dog sled back to their igloo for the traditional but happier ending. Brett's vigorously drawn illustrations tell the visual tale with imagination and humor. Endpapers depicting the activities of many anthropomorphic animals in attractive winter gear prepare us for the coming adventure. Brett's signature clever use of frames provides us with dual action plus vignettes of some other creatures at play. The naturalism of these watercolor and gouache pictures with their airbrushed backgrounds gives us considerable information about life at the Arctic Circle. Despite their size, the bear family doesn't frighten Aloo-ki
