What is 칼데콧상? Caldecott상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 그림책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 19세기에 활동한 영국의 저명한 Illustrator인 Randolph Caldecott의 업적으로 기리기 위해 1938년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 어린이 그림책 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

칼데콧상을 받은 "Grand Canyon"을 비롯해서 "Gravity," "Coral Reefs," "Redwoods," "Island" 등 최고의 과학그림책을 만들어 온 제이슨 친이 그림을 그린 또 하나의 베스트셀러 과학그림책입니다. 이 책 역시 국내에서는 "물이 돌고 돌아"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.

지구는 ‘물의 행성’이라고 불립니다. 태양계에서 유일하게 물이 존재하기 때문이지요. 그리고 그 덕분에 지구에 생명이 살 수 있답니다. 그런 물이 더욱 신기한 건 매번 그 모습을 바꾸면서 지구를 돌고 있다는 거예요. 바로 ‘물의 순환’이라고 하지요.

컵에 따른 물은 ‘액체’지만 물을 끓이면 ‘기체’인 수증기가 되어 공기 중으로 날아갑니다. 공기 중의 수증기는 안개가 되기도 하고 하늘 높이 올라가 구름을 만들기도 합니다. 구름은 나중에 빗방울이 되어 땅으로 떨어지고 시내와 강을 흐르며 동물과 식물을 키우지요. 날씨가 추워지는 겨울이 되면 ‘고체’인 얼음이 되기도 합니다.

물의 순환은 지구 환경과 생명을 유지하는 꼭 필요한 과정입니다. 어려운 과학 현상으로 여겨질 수 있지만 우리가 느끼지 못하는 동안에도 곁에서 늘 일어나고 있지요. 이 책 역시 아이들이 보내는 하루 속에서 자연스레 물의 순환을 배우게 합니다. 물 한 잔을 마시거나 끓이는 모습, 안개 낀 동네와 비 오는 학교 풍경, 겨울철 눈싸움하고 여름철 수영하는 아이들, 또 사과 주스를 마시기까지 평범한 일상의 모습 속에서 매우 중요한 과학 현상을 소개하고 있습니다.

아이가 수도꼭지에서 받은 물 한 잔에서 시작되는 이 책의 이야기는 나무에서 딴 사과로 만든 주스를 아이가 마시는 모습으로 마무리됩니다. 물이 아이의 손에서 떠나 다시 아이의 손으로 들어오는 과정을 보여 주면서 작가는 지구에서 사라지지 않고 계속 순환하며 사람의 생명에 영향을 주고 있는 물을 아끼고 오염되지 않게 보존해야 한다는 메시지를 전달합니다.

Paul's poetic text highlights various forms water takes as it follows a brother and sister through the year. It includes autumn fog and rain, frozen ponds and falling snow, steam from cups of cocoa, and snowmelt turning dirt to mud. Chin once again demonstrates his mastery of nature illustration, infusing familiar outdoor scenes with simple kid-centric activities that will hold readers' attention while they listen to the text. Although not as dramatic as George Ella Lyon's All the Water in the World (S. & S., 2011), Paul's introduction to the water cycle includes more information that will help extend learning. She provides examples of the water content of various living things and stresses Earth's limited supply of fresh water. The author ties explanations of processes such as evaporation and condensation to pages of the text. VERDICT A first-rate introduction to the water cycle for young readers.

An effortlessly multicultural cast of kids floats, darts, and dallies through various seasons of the year, while Paul uses each spread to introduce the next phase of water. Example: "Misty. / Twisty. / Where is the town? / Fog is fog unless . . ."-page turn-"it falls down. / Patter. / Splatter. / What is that sound? / Rain is rain unless . . ." You rather want to know how the line ends, don't you? This excellent rhythm, which often uses ideas and images beyond what you'd expect, is matched by Chin's playful, soft-hued, but always realistic watercolor-and-gouache paintings. Chin is especially adept at portraying light sources, whether they be an early morning glow through kitchen windows, a foggy street through which a school bus creeps, or the blinding golds of autumn sunshine through leaves. A two-page section at the back supplies a bit of the science behind these everyday miracles.”
