[ 책 소개 ]
국내에도 "내게 금지된 17가지"라는 번역서가 출간된 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore의 공저자 Jenny Offill (글), Nancy Carpenter (그림) 콤비가 만든 재미있는 그림책입니다.
호기심이 가득한 주인공 소녀가 11가지 실험을 매우 체계적(?)으로 하고 그 과정과 결과를 그림과 함께 기록한 실험노트입니다.
기발하고 엉뚱한 실험주제들에 대해서 웃음이 나오고, 그 실험 과정에서 또 한번 웃게 되며, 실패할 수 밖에 없지만 코믹한 결과에 빵 터지게 되는 책입니다.
각각의 실험들에 대해서 "1. 문제 제기, 2. 기대하는 실험결과, 3. 실험 준비물, 4. 실험 진행방법, 5. 실제로 일어난 실험결과"의 순서로 기록이 되어 있습니다.
예를 들면,
- 음식에 관한 실험
1. 문제 제기: 아이는 겨울 내내 눈과 케첩만 먹으면서 지낼 수 있을까?
2. 기대하는 실험결과: 아이는 케첩과 눈만 있으면 충분히 살 수 있다.
3. 실험 준비물: 케첩과 눈
4. 실험 진행방법: 눈덩이를 만든다 -> 눈덩이에 케첩을 뿌린다 -> 먹는다 -> 하루에 3번씩 봄이 올 때까지 눈과 케첩만 먹는다.
5. 실제로 일어난 실험결과: 배탈, 머리가 지끈거림, 그 좋아하던 케첩이 보기도 싫어진다.
- 운동역학에 관한 실험
1. 문제 제기: 학교에 갈 때 교통정체로 지루한 차의 속도를 올리는 가장 좋은 방법은 무엇일까?
2. 기대하는 실험결과: 요들송을 부르면 시간이 발리간다.
3. 실험 준비물: 어른 한명(운전사), 아이 세명(학교 갈 때 카풀하는 인원), 교통 정체
4. 실험 진행방법: "요들레이후"를 외친다 -> 더 큰 소리로 "요들레이후"를 외친다 -> 계속 반복한다.
5. 실제로 일어난 실험결과: 학교까지 걸어간다. 외로움을 느낀다.
이 외에도 동물에 관한 실험, 향기에 관한 실험, 집안 살림에 관한 실험, 식물에 관한 실험 등 총 11가지의 실패할 수 밖에 없는 재미있는 실험들이 유머러스한 그림들과 함께 실려 있습니다.

The curious and mischief-minded heroine from 17 Things I’m Not Allowed to Do Anymore turns her attention to the scientific method. A typical experiment: “Question: Do dogs like to be covered in glitter? Hypothesis: Dogs like everything.” Offill’s matter-of-fact recounting (“What to Do: 1. Call dog. 2. Cover with glitter. 3. Let dog go”) make for very funny reading and allow Carpenter to go all out with her collages, which create especially lively depictions of the protagonist’s misadventures (and her mother’s horror). Impressionable readers might be best advised: “Do not try this at home.”

Beginning with a question followed by a hypothesis, an exuberant budding scientist follows what she believes to be logical steps in proving her theories in, alas, 11 experiments that fall short of expectations. Each of her tests includes a "What You Need" and "What to Do" list and concludes with "What Happened." From attempting to confirm that children can live on a snow and ketchup diet to sending a message in a bottle to the sea via the toilet, this enthusiastic child in her white lab coat, pink rubber gloves, and safety goggles has a never-give-up attitude, much to her mother's distress. Intriguing pen-and-ink and digital media illustrations are inventive themselves as they take readers through the various steps toward unfulfilled promise and sometimes unmitigated disaster. One humorous vignette appears in both this title and in this team's 17 Things I'm Not Allowed to Do Anymore (Random, 2006): the same dog with the same long tongue licking food off the table. Though this book should come with a caution label: "Do NOT read this book to children who may perform these experiments," kids and adults will get a kick out of it. |

어떤 분 서평처럼, 아이들이 따라할까봐 좀 걱정되기는 하지만, 상상만으로도 재미있는 책 입니다. \"what you need,\" \"what to do,\" and \"what happened\" 를 반복하면서 사용되기 때문에 아이들이 이런 표현들에 익숙해질 것 같구요, 그림 색감도 예쁘고, 익살맞게 그려진 그림들도 무척 흥미롭습니다. 차만 좋아하는 우리 아이가 관심을 가지고 보는 책이라 후회없는 선택이었네요. 아이에게 절대 따라하지 말라고 이야기 해 주는 것은 필수입니다. ^^

이 책에 나온 방법을 진짜 하면 큰일나는데 아이들이 따라할까 겁나요. 주인공의 호기심은 진짜 엉뚱한데 방식은 과학실험하듯 아주 체계적이네요. 실제 실험할 때와 같습니다.

호기심을 실행하는 진지한 주인공의 천연덕스런 표정도 웃기고 실험방법을 그림으로 표현해서 이해하기 쉬워요.이 책 대박이네요. 생생한 사진을 이용한 꼴라주 기법의 시원하고 유쾌한 그림책입니다. 유투브에 제목을 치면 책도 읽어줍니다.
