주말 아침에 침대에서 일어난 엄마는 몸이 좋지 않았습니다. 하지만 아무리 몸이 아파도 엄마는 집안 일 때문에 쉴 수가 없지요. 아빠는 엄마에게 주말 동안 모든 집안 일을 자기가 하겠다면서 엄마에게는 침대에 누워서 푹 쉬라고 얘기합니다. 아빠는 엄마가 침대에서 몸조리를 하는 동안, 집안 청소부터 설거지와 아이들 돌보기까지 모든 집안 일들을 책임지겠다고 큰 소리 쳤지만... 과연 집안 일이 아빠가 감당할 수 있을만큼 그렇게 만만한 것일까요?
그림과 이야기가 너무 잘 어울리는 유머러스한 이야기입니다. 문장이 조금 많은 듯 하지만 대체로 문장이 짧고 단어도 쉬워서 어린이들이 읽거나 엄마 아빠가 읽어주기에도 부담이 없습니다. 그림과 문장의 세밀한 부분부분까지 읽다보면 즐거움과 행복함을 느끼게 해주는 책입니다. 특히 막내코끼리의 천진난만한 행동이 귀엽습니다.

Mrs. Large isn't feeling well, so Mr. Large sends her back to bed. "I'll take charge," he says. So while he and the children get busy vacuuming, dusting, and tidying, Mrs. Large settles down for a nice rest. But somehow ("I want my mommy!") Mrs. Large's restful day (What's that burning smell?) is not as restful as she'd hoped. Wise moms, well-meaning dads, and their spirited offspring will all laugh in recognition at this droll, expressively illustrated story.

Poor Mrs. Large is not feeling well and wants the day off, but her family needs her. Mr. Large announces that his poor wife should go back to bed, and he and the children will handle the day's activities just fine. Mr. Large delegates chores to the children. The baby decides to dust the sleeping Mrs. Large with a feather duster, which of course, disturbs her sleep. Later, when Mr. Large gathers his family for an afternoon at the park, he loudly announces his intentions and wakes the sleeping Mrs. Large. She just cannot get any rest. Young readers will fall in love with the Large family, who are elephants. Large text makes reading easy. Colorful illustrations grace every page and add extra whimsy to this delightful tale.

We have heard this particular song before-Mom needs a day in bed and Dad cheerfully takes over, with disastrous results. Here the beloved Large family returns to amplify the context of Mrs. Large's original attempt at Five Minutes Peace (1986), that effort being a bubble-bath soak. Mommy comes down to breakfast on a Saturday morning feeling ill, and her spouse, Mr. Large, sends her back upstairs to bed. But her rest is disturbed by son Lester's crunching vacuuming noises, Laura and the baby, who is dusting mother herself, and the burning smell created when Dad gets distracted by the soccer game while making lunch. When Dad trips over a rake, Lester runs to his mother searching for bandages. Mrs. Large decides she feels much better now and invites the whole family onto the bed for a snack. The story's telling and its pictures are funny, even if the premise isn't particularly new. |
