"굿나이트 문"을 비롯해서 수많은 명작 동화책의 저자인 마거릿 와이즈 브라운의 아름다운 글을, 국내에도 "뗏목을 타고", "곰에게 들려 준 이야기", "조금만 더" 등 여러권의 번역서가 출간된 짐 라마르크가 특유의 풍부한 색감과 따뜻한 스케치로 그림을 그렸습니다.
무성한 전나무 숲으로부터 씨앗 하나가 바람에 날려 와서 숲에서 떨어진 들판에 뿌리를 내리게 되었습니다. 씨앗에서 싹이 돋아나고 해마다 조금씩 조금씩 자랐습니다. 7년째 되는 겨울날, 낮선 사람이 삽을 가져와서 조그만 전나무를 파낸 후, 집으로 가져가서 커다란 나무 화분에 심었습니다. 그리고는 예쁘게 크리스마스 장식을 하였지요.
그 집에는 잘 걷지를 못하는 장애를 지닌 아이가 있었습니다. 아이는 창 밖 멀리 보이는 전나무 숲에 가고 싶었습니다만, 장애 때문에 늘 침대에서 지내야만 했지요. 아빠는 아이를 위해 조그만 전나무를 집 안으로 가져 온 것입니다.
겨울이 지나고 봄이 오자 아빠는 그 나무를 다시 원래 살았던 곳으로 가져가서 심어 줬습니다. 그리고 다시 겨울이 왔을 때, 아빠는 다시 그 나무를 파내서 아이를 위해 집으로 가져갔으며, 겨울이 지난 후 다시 원래 자리에 심어 줬지요.
다시 겨울이 오고, 전나무는 아이가 살던 그 집으로 갈 것을 꿈꿨습니다. 하지만 올해는 아무도 그 나무를 찾아오지 않았습니다. 많은 눈이 내리고 온 세상이 고요하던 어느날 저녁에, 멀리서 불빛들이 보이기 시작했습니다. 그리고 전혀 예상치 못했던 일이 일어나지요...

This sweet Christmas story was written in 1954 and has now been given a new opportunity to touch the hearts of young and old. The beautifully glowing illustrations&--all new in this 2005 edition--are perfectly matched to the endearing story. A little fir tree gets taken indoors once a year to help a very special little boy celebrate the Christmas season,--"a living tree" to bring the smell of the forest into the home of a little boy who has "a lame leg." Lamarche's faces are, as always, full of love and delight in life. The mother and father strive to give the little boy lots of experiences, even though he is confined to his bed. They share the season with neighborhood children and everyone is filled with obvious happiness. The seasons come and go and each year the father returns to dig up the tree for the holiday season and then to return it to its field to grow for the rest of the year. After several wondrous celebrations we see the tree standing in the snowy field all alone, longing to be part of the festivities yet again, but the "man with the long boots" has not appeared to collect the little fir tree. "The world seemed big and cold and empty" when the tree hears the sound of music and realizes that people are coming out into the field. To the tree's surprise and pleasure, the little boy is leading them in a joyful march to decorate the tree with bright red apples, berries, and cookies for the birds to eat. They surround the tree and sing the song the little boy had sung when he first saw the little fir tree " . . . your greenest branches live for me." This is a lovely family story to share during the Christmas season.

LaMarche updates this sentimental story, first published in 1954, with new illustrations showcased through an oversized format and many double-page spreads. The little fir tree of the title was chosen by a kindly father as the special Christmas tree for his disabled young son, a child of three or four with a "lame leg" who "had never left his bed." The tree is brought to the little boy for two Christmases and then returned to the forest to be replanted each spring. The third year, the tree waits to be part of the boy's Christmas again, but this time the boy and his family and friends come out to the forest to celebrate because the boy has learned to walk. The story is rather dated in both its anthropomorphized tree and in its treatment of someone with a disability, although it is made clear through the illustrations that the setting is long ago and far away in a remote mountain village. LaMarche's paintings capture the beauty of the forest and the warmth of friends and family in a cozy, old-fashioned home. Though the little boy is appealing in some illustrations, his age progression is inconsistent in the concluding spreads. Still, this is a lovely way to revisit an old favorite. |
