아이들은 책을 읽으면서 전세계의 동물들이 처한 위험 즉, 공해, 습지 건조화, 산림 난개발 등의 문제를 깨닫게 됩니다. 하지만 아이들은 곧 소년과 강아지가 동물들을 한마리씩 구해내는 과정을 보며 기뻐하게 될 것입니다. John Burningham는 강력한 자연보호 메세지를 아이들이 친숙하기 쉬운 기차 놀이를 통해 전달하고 있습니다.
[ 작가 소개 ]
전후 시대의 대표적인 작가인 존 버닝햄(John Burningham 1936~)은 현재 가장 주목받는 영국 3대 그림책 작가 중 한 사람입니다.
1964년 그의 첫 번째 그림책인 Borka(보르카)로 Kate Greenaway 상을 받았으며, 1970년 Mr. Gumpy's Outing(검피 아저씨의 뱃놀이)으로 두 번째 Kate Greenaway 상을 수상하였습니다.
Burningham은 간결한 글과 마치 어린 아이들이 그리는 그림처럼 꽉 채워지지 않은 자유로운 화풍으로 독특한 상상의 세계를 이끌어 나갑니다. 특히 아이들의 무의식의 세계와 심오한 주제를 표현하는 작가로도 유명하며, 그림 동화 작가인 Helen Oxenbury(헬렌 옥슨버리,1938~)의 남편이기도 합니다.
그 밖의 작품으로는 Cloudland(구름나라 - 비룡소), ALDO(알도 - 시공사), Mr Gumpy's Motor Car (검피 아저씨의 드라이브 - 시공사) 등이 우리말로 번역되어서 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다.

Burningham's latest book is extremely clever in combining words and pictures that are equally innovative. A boy, playing with a toy train in his bedroom, is told by his mother to go to bed. He closes his eyes, and soon is hurtling through the countryside on his train, in the company of his stuffed dog, who has come to life. ``Hey! Get off our train,'' they say to an elephant who climbs on board. The elephant explains that he is trying to escape from someone who wants to cut off his tusks, so they let him stay. The boy and the dog also give sanctuary to other endangered animals, including a seal, a crane, a tiger and a polar bear, as the train travels through different lands. Burningham uses color sparsely and effectively, and his artwork, which incorporates many styles, offers a different effect on almost every page. The story's important, timely message of protection for endangered species is delivered with just enough subtlety and delightful humor. The surprise ending is terrific.

This ecological fable uses creative mixed-media illustrations to showcase a serious message within a humorous and fun book. In a dream sequence, a boy and his canine companion board his toy train for a trip around the world. They interrupt their journey to get off the train and play, but when they return they discover that an uninvited elephant has come on board. The pair are indignant--until they learn of the elephant's plight: he has become an endangered species because of his tusks. In their travels, they in turn encounter a seal, a crane, a tiger, and a polar bear, each recounting the environmental hazards that threaten its survival. The animals are then welcomed aboard. In the final scene, when the boy's mother comes to wake him, she voices her suspicions about his nocturnal activity, for the house is now full of exotic animals. The book's message is loud and clear. While readers will be in complete sympathy with the philosophy espoused here, they may resent the book's heavy-handedness. The pen-and-ink/pastel sketches of the boy and the animals have an endearing innocence, and there is a Turner-like quality in the full-page illustrations that depict an old-fashioned, coal-powered locomotive bursting with power and energy as it clatters along. Good intentions, laudable as they may be, do not make a successful picture book.

Only Burningham could make an ecological fable so much fun. A boy goes to bed and dreams that he and his stuffed dog, now a railroad engineer, are speeding through the countryside playing games and picking up endangered animals. Spacious drawings contrasted with textured landscape paintings create a striking effect as the artist juggles antic humor with a serious message--and never misses a beat. |

처음에는 아이가 좋아할 종류의 책이 아닌 것 같아서 엄마 욕심으로만 구입했었는데, 너무 좋아하는군요.
그림의 분위기가 특이해서 또 유명한 책이니까 아이의 수준과는 상관..

처음에는 아이가 좋아할 종류의 책이 아닌 것 같아서 엄마 욕심으로만 구입했었는데, 너무 좋아하는군요.
그림의 분위기가 특이해서 또 유명한 책이니까 아이의 수준과는 상관하지 않았는데요.
그 전에 '검피 아저씨의 뱃놀이'를 읽어서인지, 반복되는 말때문에 재미가 들려서 그런지 적응을 잘 하는
것 같더군요.
유명한 책들은 영어책으로 꼭 소장하고 싶은 욕심을 떨칠 수가 없는데, 이 책도 한글판은 도서관에서
빌려보았답니다.
조심할 것은 아이들 입에서 get off라는 말이 수시로 나오는 일입니다....

 소년의 꿈을 통해 뭔가를 생각하게 해주는 책.. |
한 소년이 밤에 기차놀이를 하다말고 잠자리에 듭니다.
소년은 개와 함께 꿈속에서 신나는 기차여행을 하기 시작하는데...
잠깐 멈출때마다 왠 동물들이 한 마리씩 기차에 올라탑니다.
소년은 매번 외치죠..."야,..

잠깐 멈출때마다 왠 동물들이 한 마리씩 기차에 올라탑니다.

그 때마다 동물들은 각각 하소연을 합니다.
코끼리는 사람들이 자신들의 상아를 모두 베어갈려고 하고,
물개는 사람들이 바다를 오염시키고 물고기들을 너무 많이 잡아버려 먹을 것이 부족하고,
두루미는 사람들이 물을 너무 많이 끌어가버려 서식처가 메말라가고 있으며,
호랑이는 자신이 사는 숲이 많이 벌목되고 개발되어 점차 사라지고 있으며,
북극곰은 사람들이 자신들의 털로 코트를 만들려고 한다고...말이죠.
책을 읽고나면 다시 한 번 환경문제를 진지하게 생각하게 만듭니다.
존 버닝햄의 작품 중 '지각대장 존'처럼 무언의 메시지를 전하는 책이라 작품성이 있어보여 갠적으로 좋아하는 책입니다.

저희 집에는 한글 번역본으로도 있는 책인데요
야 우리기차에서 내려 라는 제목으로 번역되어있어요
존 버드러 작품으로 유명한 작품이라 주저없이 구매하게 되네요
그림풍은 잔잔한 파스텔 톤으로 되어있구요 ..

책 크기도 커서 시원시원 하구요
글밥도 그렇게 많지 않구 반복되는 부분이 많아서리 읽어주기 그리 힘들진 않네요
애가 어느정도 크다보니 이제 원서에 눈을 돌리게 되는데 많이 읽어주고 하면 좋을거 같네요
