영국의 3대 그림책 작가중 하나인 John Burningham의 독특한 화풍을 감상할 수 있는 책입니다. 우리나라에서는 "지각대장 존"이라는 제목으로 번역되어 출간되었습니다.
존이 학교에 가는 길에 하수구 맨홀에서 악어가 나와서 가방을 물고 놔주지를 않았어요. 존은 장갑 하나를 던저서 악어를 따돌리고 학교에 갔지만, 선생님은 지각한 존의 이야기를 믿지를 않고 다시는 거짓말 하지 않고 지각하지 않겠다는 반성문을 300번 쓰는 벌을 주었지요. 다음날은 학교에 가는 길에 사자가 나타나서 엉덩이의 옷을 물어 뜯었지요. 존은 나무 위로 도망갔다가 결국 학교에 지각하게 되고 이번에도 선생님은 존의 말을 믿지를 않았지요....
마지막에서의 반전이 재미있습니다. 어린이들의 시각이 아닌 어른들의 시각에서 보면 아이들의 이야기는 터무니 없이 느껴질 때가 많지요. 하지만 세파에 물든 어른들에 비해 아이들은 훨씬 순수하고 진실되므로 아이들의 눈높이에 맞춰서 생각을 해보면 허황된 것 같은 아이들의 말속에 숨은 진실을 깨달을 수 있다는 교훈을 줍니다.

판지를 천이나 가죽으로 감싸기도 합니다. 책의 속지는 일반적으로 중성처리된 종이(Acid-free paper)를 사용해서 잘 변질이 되지 않기 때문에 오랫동안 보관하기에 적합합니다. 이 종류의 책은 더스트 재킷, 또는 더스트 커버로 불리는 표지덮개가 함께 있는 경우가 많습니다. 간혹 내부 속지가 콩기름 코팅이 된 경우 고약한 냄새가 나는 책도 있습니다.

``John Patrick Norman McHennessy set off along the road to learn.'' Along that road, he encounters crocodiles, lions, and tidal waves, all of which proceed to make him late for school. However, true to form, his teacher (an ugly, formidable figure) re fuses to accept his outrageous excuses, exclaiming that there are no such things along the road. When John Patrick fi nally manages to make it to school on time one uneventful morning, he finds his instructor being kidnapped by a gi ant gorilla. But John Patrick doesn't panic. After all, he knows there is no such thinghis teacher told him so. Burningham uses mixed media here to create boldly-colored illustrations which do a marvelous job of reinforcing the text. The storyline is a simple one, but it is filled with irony. Kids will iden tify with the unfairness depicted here and will enjoy the twist of fate which brings this ogre of an educator his come-uppance. |
