저명한 Illustrator인 Jon J Muth가 2006년에 Caldecott Honor상을 받은 "Zen Shorts"와 마찬가지로 팬더곰 스틸워터와 칼(막내), 마이클(형), 에디(누나)의 3남매, 그리고 스틸워터의 조카인 쿠가 등장해서 사람들은 서로 연결되어 있고, 서로 의지하며 살아간다는 인연의 소중함을 일깨우는 이야기를 들려줍니다.

스틸워터와 그의 친구인 마이클, 애디, 칼 3남매 그리고 스틸워터의 조카인 쿠는 힘을 모아 몸이 불편하신 이웃의 괴짜 부인을 도와드리게 됩니다. 평소 무섭게만 느껴졌던 부인이지만, 아이들은 정성껏 수프를 끓여 갖다드리고, 집 안 청소를 하고, 예쁜 그림도 그려드립니다. 혼자 외롭게 살면서 차갑게 얼어붙어 있던 부인의 마음은 서서히 녹기 시작합니다. 그러다 ‘철자 맞히기 대회’에 나가게 된 마이클이 자신 없어 할 때, 과거 영어 선생님이었던 부인이 큰 도움을 주게 됩니다. 그 덕분에 철자 맞히기 대회에서 우숭한 마이클은 상으로 받은 빨간 리본 상장을 부인에게 선물합니다. 처음에는 아이들이 부인을 도우러 찾아간 것이었지만, 나중에는 부인에게 뜻밖의 보상을 받게 된 셈입니다. 이런 이야기를 통해 작가 존 무스는, 우리는 결코 혼자 힘만으로 살아갈 수 없고, 서로 도우며 살아가야 하는 존재임을 깨닫게 해줍니다.

한편 책의 후반부에 보면 등장인물들이 다 같이 모여 사과차를 마시는 장면이 나옵니다. 여기서 사과차는 이 그림책에서 인연의 소중함을 나타내는 상징적인 의미를 담고 있습니다. 칼이 부인을 위해 직접 나무에 올라 따온 사과를 선물하자, 부인은 어머니한테서 사과차 만드는 법을 배웠다며 애디의 도움을 받아 사과차를 끓여 다 함께 나눠 마십니다. 그리고 집으로 돌아가는 날, 쿠는 사과차 향기가 남아 있는 일회용 컵을 버리지 않고 간직하겠다고 말합니다. 그 향기에는 여러 사람과의 소중한 인연과 추억이 배어 있을 테니까요. 또한 다 같이 차를 마실 때 저마다 목에 매고 있는 빨간 타이는 서로가 서로에게 소중한 인연으로 맺어졌음을 나타냅니다.

이 책은 작가의 말처럼 우리는 모두 연결되어 있고 서로가 서로에게 의지하고 있으며, 우리들 각자는 세상이라는 넓은 바다를 이루는 작은 물결들이라는 사실을 잔잔하지만 깊은 울림으로 말해주는 그림책입니다.

Stillwater, the giant panda who taught Zen parables to siblings Karl, Addy and Michael in Zen Shorts, continues to combine his slow-moving grace with genuine spiritual tranquility. This time, Michael faces a daunting spelling bee, and Stillwater, first seen wearing a necktie, introduces the three to Miss Whitaker, an elderly neighbor whose crabby outbursts have frightened them. Stillwater's inward eye sees through her anger to her fear and loneliness. She turns out to be a marvelous spelling coach (Just like plants, words have roots, she tells Michael. Roots of words can teach you to spell), and when Michael wins a red ribbon, the pictures show the whole group sharing his victory with their own red ribbons - the Zen ties of the title. (Zentai is Japanese for the whole or the entire, as in all of us together.) A subplot featuring Koo, Stillwater's nephew, drifts a bit; he's a cute little panda who punctuates the action with Zen-influenced haiku (and allows Muth another pun: Hi, Koo!). Muth's brush is as sure as ever; Stillwater's big, blunt paws and hunched-over listening posture are irresistible, and Miss Whitaker's delicate face and snow-white hair beautifully counterpoint the vignettes of youthful play. From a religious tradition that makes no theological demands and that will be unfamiliar to most readers, Stillwater offers a model of pure saintliness, and children will instantly respond to him.
