설령 모자가 사라졌다는 사실을 알았어도 자신이 훔친 줄은 모를 것이라고 자신합니다. 작은 물고기는 살랑살랑 헤엄쳐서 커다랗고 촘촘하게 자라난 물풀들이 있는 장소를 찾아갑니다. 거기에 숨으면 아무도 자신을 찾지 못할 거라고 생각하면서 말입니다. 그런데 작은 물고기가 물풀 속에 숨으러 가는 것을 붉은 게가 알게 됩니다. 붉은 게는 아무한테도 말하지 않겠다고 맹세하고 작은 물고기는 그 말을 철석같이 믿습니다.
하지만 붉은 게는 작은 물고기를 배신하고, 꿈에도 그런 사실을 모르는 작은 물고기는 자신이 모자를 훔친 것이 잘못된 것이 아니며, 커다란 물고기보다 자신한테 더 어울리는 모자라고 스스로 합리화합니다. 드디어 빽빽한 물풀 속에 숨어 들어간 작은 물고기. 그리고 그 뒤를 쫓아 들어간 커다란 물고기. 예전처럼 커다란 물고기는 다시 모자를 찾아 쓰고 잠이 듭니다.
