이 외에도 개미, 기린, 거미, 돼지, 메뚜기, 바닷가재, 염소, 나방 등 다양한 동물들과 함께 해서는 안될 일들을 재미있게 보여줍니다. 하지만 커다란 부리주머니를 가진 펠리컨과는 함께 쇼핑을 가면 별도롤 장바구니를 들고 다닐 필요가 없어서 정말 편리하다네요.

There are many things that you should never, ever do - like take a giraffe to the cinema (who would want the seat behind?), or sit next to a porcupine on an underground train (ouch!), or shop for shoes with a centipede (how long would that take?). But who ALWAYS makes the best shopping partner? A pelican, of course! A raucous look at the perils of taking goats to the library, a shark to the dentist and other such silly stuff.

In this compilation of advice, Barrett once again puts a humorous spin on otherwise mundane scenarios, juxtaposing seemingly serious wisdom with absurdity. In addition to the title admonition, warnings such as "Never go shopping for shoes with a centipede," "Never play double Dutch with a grasshopper," and "Never hold hands with a lobster" are fairly self-explanatory, while others rely more heavily on the artwork. Fortunately, Nickle cleverly illustrates each of these cautionary statements with careful acrylic images that will be appreciated by kids. As in Things That Are Most in the World (S & S, 1998), he takes Barrett's amusing phrases and paints them with details that expose the silliness. Statements like "Never go to the bank with a raccoon" become hilarious when combined with the looks on the faces of the animals involved. And "Never take a goat with you to the library" is sure to get a laugh at storytimes. After all of the negative warnings, the book concludes on a positive suggestion to "always go shopping with a pelican," tidily wrapping up the book.

Barrett, the author of such popular books as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (1978), presents examples of experiences with animals that one should largely avoid. Although she suggests it’s OK to go shopping with a pelican, it’s not good to take a giraffe to the movies (the page unfolds to accommodate the giraffe’s long neck) or go to the shoe store with a centipede. Some reasons for caution seem obvious (nobody need ants at a picnic); others are more dependent on the illustrations. Young viewers will appreciate the structural consistency of the book. A statement declaring what one shouldn’t do appears on the left-hand page, opposite a full-page illustration showing the consequences of ignoring the advice. The colorful acrylic illustrations are populated entirely with animals, often oddly juxtaposed. Yet the very incongruity, along with the animals’ various antics and the expressions on the characters’ faces are all part of the fun and fit perfectly with the droll humor of the concept. This is sure to be another crowd-pleaser. |

론 바레트의 펜 세밀화 풍의 그림을 좋아하는 터라 아쉽긴 해도,
이 책 나름의 매력이 있습니다.
이 책은 한글판으로 보았을 때부터,
영어책으로 사야겠다 싶었어요.
왜냐, 문장이 짧으니까. ㅋㅋㅋ
상황에 맞지않는 주인공의 모습에
난처하기도 하고,
우스꽝스럽기도 합니다.
그림만 봐도 애들이 좋아합니다.

 단순하지만 기발하고 재미있는 책 |
누구나 한번쯤은 해볼만한 생각들을 글과 그림으로 재미있게 표현했네요.
상어가 치과에 간다면?
지네가 신발을 신느다면?
메뚜기가 고무줄 뛰기를 한다면?...등
책이란게 뭐 어렵고 딱딱할필요 있나요?

특히 너구리가 은행강도로 오인받는 장면...넘 웃깁니다.
쉽고 재미있고 뭔가 독특한 책을 찾으신다면 이 책이 딱일듯 싶네요.

 진짜 진짜 재밌어요 |
이런 책이 있는 줄도 몰랐는데 정말 재밌네요.
하늘에서 음식이 내려요~~의 작가군요.
역시 내공이 다른 느낌이에요.
각각의 동물들이 등장하고 상황이 만들어집니다.
짧은 문장 속에 꼭맞는 상황이 얼마나 재..
이런 책이 있는 줄도 몰랐는데 정말 재밌네요.

역시 내공이 다른 느낌이에요.
각각의 동물들이 등장하고 상황이 만들어집니다.
짧은 문장 속에 꼭맞는 상황이 얼마나 재밌는지
큰 애, 작은 애, 아이 친구들 모두 너무 재밌어합니다.
왜 그래서는 안되는지 아이랑 얘기를 나눠보기 좋게 이유는 나와있지 않습니다.
글을 읽고 그림을 보면서 상상해보는 거지요.
쉬운 것도 있고 배경지식에 따라 어려운 것도 있어요.
나방이 옷을 갈아먹을 수도 있다는 생각을 미쳐 못해서 moth가 나온 부분에서는 한참 헤매기도 했답니다.
아이들과 이런 저런 이야기를 나누면서 재밌게 읽어보세요.
