Annotation
A group of toddlers demonstrate all the fun things that they can do with their eyes, ears, mouths, hands, legs, feet--and everything in between.
Book Description
From a wiggle of their shoulders to a stomp of their feet, a group of lovable toddlers joyfully explores the many ways to use their bodies. Lips can be made small for kissing, while arms can go up and down or reach out to hug those we love. Judy Hindley's jaunty text and Brita Granstrom's playful illustrations are perfect for children as they begin to discover the wonders of their bodies and the joy of learning to move.
Sesame Street Parents
Let's find some toes and count up those---and then let's wiggle and waggle each one! The sheer joy of the rhyme adds to the fun of this inviting book, where each turn of the page features a game that involves different parts of the body. (A mouth is to yawn...Open wide...See all the teeth and the tongue inside?) In addition, the clear, exuberant pictures of toddlers in action will pull kids in to join the playful movements and discover the wonder of their bodies.
Publishers Weekly
A celebration of the body and what it can do, this book careens from part to part with infectious enthusiasm. Hindley's (The Best Thing About a Puppy) text erratically bounces along in silly, free-spirited rhymes with a nod to Ruth Krauss's A Hole Is to Dig: "Ears are to find at the sides of your head./ Are you wearing your ears today?/ Hurray!" Granstr m's (The World Is Full of Babies) illustration shows a freckled boy talking into the long, droopy ear of a tail-wagging, alert basset hound. Changes in type size and alignment suggest motion, as in the lines "Feet are for STOMPING/ and suddenly--/ STOPPING." On the next page the pictured toddlers delight in falling "BUMP!/ On our bottoms,/ side by side." The artwork sets a multicultural crop of kids, toys and pets against a simple backdrop of child-like black crayon drawings and flat watercolor washes. The sunny toddlers (cute clothes, too) laugh, wriggle, stretch, reach and tickle to the accompaniment of the gleeful text.
School Library Journal
A blend of simple rhyming text and full- and double-page illustrations highlights energetic toddlers playing peekaboo, blowing noses, clapping hands, and wiggling toes. The title-page spread shows a boy drawing with a crayon while a girl is motioning with her hand for readers to enter. Inside, the diverse group of children is having loads of fun: "Knees are to bend,/so let's all sit down-BUMP!" Illustrations in crayon, watercolor, and pencil are set against bright pastel backgrounds. The print size varies according to the mood and action. A book for repeated sharing and a lively addition to any storytime.
Kirkus Reviews
Hindley (The Best Thing about a Puppy, 1998, etc.) offers an open invitation to toddlers to get physical in this joyful celebration of body parts from head to toe. In simple, buoyant verse, and illustrated with equal expression, accessibility, and incitement, Hindley introduces the ears, eyes, the nose, toes, fingers, hands, arms, mouths, lips, necks, and knees. Hide behind those fingers, wiggle and waggle those toes, "legs are for leaping and jumping and dancing. Legs are for kicking and skipping and hopping. Legs are for stomping and suddenly—stopping." The pleasure of movement flows from these pages, and the pleasure of company: "And I'll tell you again. Kisses are little, smiles are wide. A hug is a bundle with you inside." |
