This book is one of those cross-breeds; it is a novel of adult concernswritten as though for children, sharing a genre with such illustrious neighbors as 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'The Little Prince' {by A. de Saint-Exupery, BRD 1943}. Will children 8 to 12 understand Jimmy's angst? Maybe and maybe not, but there are enough other pleasures along the way to satisfy readers of any age. This reviewer particularly enjoyed the examples of Jimmy's comic art. The adventures of Mini-Man, Bullethead and the Man in the Ceiling, Jimmy's magnum opus, are reprinted in glorious pencil and run as long as six pages.

Jimmy Jibbett, the hero of Feiffer's first children's novel, The Man in the Ceiling is, like his creator, an innocent. Jimmy gives a preadolescent view that is fresh, unusual, and underrepresented. Jimmy, a ten-year-old cartoonist, lives with a difficult family. His cute younger sister, Susu, wheedles attention. His older sister, Lisi, has yet to give up temper tantrums (probably because they serve her so effectively). His father struggles to change from a driven businessman to a sensitive male. Jimmy's mother hides from her children in an attic "sanctum sanctorum," designing clothes and chiding Jimmy whenever he behaves "ungenerously." Jimmy is, in fact, the most generous child ever depicted in a middle grade novel. Jimmy is compassionate and understanding, never martyring, always accepting. "What's unusual about Jimmy, " says Feiffer, "is that he's really not angry at his family. He's just trying to understand things and so much in the adult world is beyond his understanding. Jimmy's the kind of kid who always exists for the purpose of the grownups, not for himself, as if he's there to serve them."

아들들은 자기 아버지에 대해서 저마다 소망이 있습니다.
하지만 그 수준이 못 되어 주는 현실의 아버지들은, 그냥 바쁘기만 하지요.
물론 아이들은 나름대로 그런 아버지를 이해해주지만요.
일반적인 가정에서의 아버지에 대해서,
작가가, 어린 아들 시각에서, 풀어놓는 해석들이 재밌습니다.
주인공 Jimmy는 야구를 관심없어 합니다.
하지만 아버지는 야구광이죠. TV를 보면 맨날 야구경기중계방송만 봅니다.
이상하게도 누나 Lisi는 야구가 재밌나봅니다.
TV 속 야구선수가 실수를 하면, 아빠는 "이렇게 해야지! 저렇게 해야지!"라고 큰 소리치기도 하는데요(스트레스 해소 중).
우리 Jimmy 가 생각할 땐, 그것조차 자기 탓인거 같군요.
Since father couldn't advise Jimmy, he advised the players on the TV screen and shared that advice with Lisi.

이 책이 뜬 것을 보니 어릴 때 꿈이 만화가 였던 게 생각이 나서 한 번 구입해 보았어요.
영어공부 할 겸 해서 아이 책으로 원서읽기를 하는데 어른이 읽기에는 유치해서 몰입하기 힘든 책도 많았어요.
