에드가 드가(Edgar Degas)의 명화들과 한 편의 시적 음률을 느낄 수 있는 책입니다.
유난히도 발레 무용수들의 생활상을 많이 그렸던 드가의 작품들이 한대 모여 한 편의 이야기를
엮어냅니다.
발레 수업에 들어가기 전 발레리나는 준비를 하지요. 발레 슈즈를 신고 머리를 묶어 올립니다.
발을 들어 올리고 발끝을 고추 세우는 준비 동작도 빠트려서는 안되지요.
하나, 둘, 셋, 넷….선생님의 구령에 맞춰 마루바닥을 가로질러 돌고, 바이올린과 오보에, 첼로의
화음 역시 없어서는 안된답니다.
무대 위에서 발레리나들은 하늘하늘한 예쁜 발레복을 입고 걷기도, 뛰기도, 빙글빙글 돌기도
합니다. 우아한 몸짓으로, 공주가 되어보기도 하고, 탬버린을 가지고 춤도 추지요. 공연이
끝나면 웃으며 멋지게 인사를 합니다. 음악도 그치고, 무용도 끝이 나지요.
무대 위에서 내려온 발레리나들은 무척 지쳐보입니다. 지친 다리와 발을 쉬게 하고 곧 꿈 속으로
빠져들겠지요.
에드가 드가(1834-1917)는 은행가의 아들로 태어나 미술 애호가였던 아버지의 영향으로 일찍부터
예술적인 분위기에 접할 수 있었다고 합니다. 그는 고전주의 영향으로 날카로운 관찰을 통한
훌륭한 솜씨의 데생과 사물 형태의 윤곽을 명확히 선묘하려는 것과 강한 명암 및 채도 대비의
효과 등에 치중해 그림을 그렸습니다.
인상주의 화가들이 빛의 변화에 따른 사물의 다양한 인상을 포착하려 한 반면, 드가는 동작이나
자세, 선 등 형태의 분석에 많은 관심을 보였습니다.

In Dancing with Degas, children enter a magical world of ballerinas and tutus, and A Picnic with Monet takes children through the countryside and back to the city. At the end, the works are identified along with the museums where they are housed.
Children's Literature
Board books that can introduce a lesson or fine art and make it work seamlessly with the text are rare. This book along with its companion A Picnic with Monet succeed in telling a kid friendly story using the work of a great artist to do so. It is a wonderful combination. Degas was fascinated with ballerinas and his paintings document various facets of their professional lives. We see them preparing for class, practicing at the bar and with the dancemaster. Then the dancers are on stage and the musicians are in the pit. As the beautiful ballerinas twirl and leap across the stage, the text also swirls across the page. After the dance is complete, the star takes a bow, and finally all the dancers get to rest their legs and feet. The paintings in the book are all identified on the concluding page (title, date, and where the original can be seen). A great choice for schools and personal collections. |
