A well-drawn portrayal of the complex emotions of an adolescent's first confrontation with death. Morgan and Jimmy have been inseparable friends since birth. When Jimmy is killed by a drunk driver, Morgan's pain seems un bearable. The novel candidly charts the range of Morgan's grief and her slow growth towards acceptance and maturity. Poignantly, the novel opens with a mention of Jimmy's death, then jumps to before the accident as Morgan narrates the events leading up to and following it. Deaver has an acute ear for dialogue; the novel progresses with snappy, realistic exchanges between Morgan and Jimmy. The friendship that they share is just that a close friendship that, refreshingly, is without romantic involvement. The role models presented are a real plus, too. Jim my aspires to be a ballet dancer, and Mor gan's aunt is an attractive psychiatrist. Jimmy's fondness for Fred Astaire is a nice touch, as is the Burns and Allen refer ence in the titlea reference which young readers unfortunately may not under stand. Paterson's Bridge to Terabithia (Crowell, 1977) superbly handles the acci dental death of a friend for younger read ers. Goodnight, Gracie is more sensitive, engaging and realistic than Brancato's Facing Up (Knopf, 1984). It is a memorable first novel. |

17살 주인공 Morgan이 친구 Jimmy를 시카고 교통사고로 잃으면서 겪는 감정들을 담고 있네요.
둘은, 엄마도 고등학교 동창이였었고, 우연히 같은 산부인과에서 태어나 고등학교까지 쭉 함께 다닌 사이죠.
Morgan 의 Aunt Lo가 정신과 의사라서, 중간 중간 조언도해 주고 많이 도와주네요.
"There's always a first time.
Always look on the bright side."
제목은 유명한 문구죠, 대화소재를 바꾸는.
'The Burns and Allen Show' 에서 George Burns가 Gracie Allen 에게 마지막 멘트로 날리던 말이라는군요.
'완곡한 거절'의 의미로 여러 곳에서 사용된다는군요.

모건과 지미의 엄마는 고등학교때 친구였어요. 그런데 모건과 지미를 출산할 무렵 모건과 지미의 엄마는 우연하게 병원에서 다시 만나 친하게 되었어요. 엄마들은 모건과 지미의 어린 모습을 사진으로 찍고 기록하는데 열광적이었기 때문에 지미와 나-모건의 사진이 아주 많았어요. 내가 좋아하는 마지막 사진은 지미의 뒷마당에서 찍은 것으로, 지마와 내가 서로 한 쪽 팔을 자연스럽게 어깨 위에 걸치고는 우리 사이의 관계를 보여주고 있는 듯한 사진이었어요. 이 사진을 지미와 보면서 지미가 말했어요.
\"What we have is better,\" he said once. \"Lovers come and go, but friends go on and on.\"
처음 몇 쪽만 읽어봤는데 아주 잔잔한 내용으로 이어질 것 같은 느낌이에요. 책 크기는 작고 아담해서 가방에 넣고 다니면서 이동중에 읽기에 아주 좋아요.
