From School Library Journal
When a young cub hears a mysterious rumbling noise in the middle of the night, his imagination runs wild. As he thinks about some of the creatures capable of creating such a racket, his cries for "Dad!" become louder and louder. No one comes to the rescue. Finally, Teddy climbs out of bed, opens the door to his parents' room, and discovers that the terrifying sound is only his father snoring. Large and colorful pop-ups take center stage here. Each monster that Teddy imagines jumps up as a bigger-than-life, 3-D paper sculpture. A scary lion opens its mouth wide, a garishly green gorilla reaches out with hairy arms, a yellow-eyed elephant lifts its huge trunk, and an enormous rhinoceros raises its spiky horn. Meanwhile, the bear is shown cowering under his covers, his smaller size and position off to the side making him seem especially vulnerable. At story's end, youngsters lift a page to reveal a pop-up of Dad's sleeping face, complete with a hidden paper device that makes a sawing sound. A picture of Teddy's mother, wearing curlers in her hair and large earplugs, helps to lighten the tone and matches the humorous resolution. While this book is too fragile to circulate, it makes an attention-grabbing selection for storytimes about night frights. |
