초등학교 2학년생이고 아시아계 미국인인 앨빈 호는 수없이 많은 것들을 무서워하는 겁쟁이입니다.
앨빈은 엄마가 점점 뚱뚱해지고 있다고 느꼈습니다. 처음에는 엄마가 즐겨 먹는 모찌떡 때문이라고 생각했습니다만, 알고보니 엄마는 임신을 한 것이었습니다.
아기는 정말 겁나는 존재지요. 만약에 대비해서 심폐소생술도 배워둬야 하고, 기저귀 가는 법도 배워야 하는 것도 두려운 일이지만, 무엇보다도 아기가 여자애일 수도 있다는 점이 앨빈에게는 가장 두려운 일이었죠.
