Newbery 상은 해마다 미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서 그 해의 가장 뛰어난 어린이 문학책에 수여하는 상이며, 한 작품에 Medal상을, 그리고 2~5편의 작품에 Honor상을 수여합니다. 이 상은 18세기에 영국에서 세계 최초로 아동문학책을 출간하여 상업적으로 성공을 거둔 출판인 John Newbery의 업적을 기리기 위해 1922년에 제정되었으며, 현재는 아동문학 분야의 세계에서 가장 권위있는 상으로 인정받고 있습니다.

차별에 맞서는 용기란 편견에 굴하지 않고 꿈을 향해 걷는 것!
이책은 한 소녀가 자신 앞에 주어진 제약과 한계에 굴하지 않고 나아가는 훌륭한 성장 동화입니다. 시대 배경은 미국에서 인종차별이 당연시되던 19세기 말. 한국인 혼혈 엄마와 백인 아빠에게서 태어난 한나는 엄마에게서 많은 유산을 물려받았습니다. “시간을 아끼려면 시간을 들여야 해.”, “너에 대한 생각을 멈춰. 다른 사람들을 봐. 다른 사람을 위해 일을 해. 그러면 기분이 좋아지고 나쁜 생각이 들어설 공간이 사라져.”처럼 세상을 바라보는 시각뿐 아니라, 바느질과 재봉에 대한 재능까지 물려받았습니다. 마을 사람들이 유색인종과 같은 교실에서 자기 애를 함께 공부시킬 수 없다며 아이들을 학교에 보내지 않자, 한나는 빨리 졸업시험을 치러 학교를 졸업해버립니다. 그리고 훌륭한 ‘드레스메이커’가 되어 마을 사람들로부터 존경받겠다고 다짐합니다.
아빠를 도와서 가게를 꾸미고 드레스를 만들고, 베스와 친구가 되지만 마을 사람들의 한나를 향한 편견은 멈추지 않습니다. 한나는 길거리에서 술에 취한 백인 남성의 조롱을 받지만 마을 사람들은 마치 한나의 잘못인양 손가락질합니다. 급기야 아빠의 가게 개업식이 코앞인데 아무도 참석하지 않겠다고 하네요. 한나는 이대로 포기해야 하는 걸까요?
어린이들은 자라며 자신이 사는 세상이 불공평하다는 걸 깨닫습니다. 하지만 그보다 중요한 것은 ‘어쩔 수 없다’ 고 포기하거나 울분을 토하는 일만은 아닙니다. 한나는 자신의 꿈이 무너져 내릴지도 모르는 순간, “자신이 있는 곳에서 싸워야 한다.”는 엄마의 말을 기억합니다. 한나가 꿈을 향해 나아가는 모습, 당면한 문제를 마주하는 용기가 독자에게 깊은 인상을 남기는 작품입니다.
