"A long way out in the deep blue sea there lived a fish. Not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. His scales were every shade of blue and green and purple, with sparkling silver scales among them." So begins Marc Pfister's The Rainbow Fish, a picture book kids love for its simple life lessons, and of course for the Rainbow Fish's metallic, iridescent scales that shimmer and gleam on every page. Who is this Rainbow Fish? He's kind of a snob, actually. Being the most beautiful fish in the whole ocean, he swims around proud and silent, even scornful. Soon, he's the loneliest fish in the whole ocean. In the end, taking the advice of a wise octopus, he gives his scales away one by one, until he looks just like everybody else--and is a whole lot happier. In Rainbow Fish to the Rescue, we learn another lesson. His school of fishy friends (all with shiny scales now) won't let a little tiger fish play with them because he doesn't have a shiny scale.
