Book Description
When Mrs. Connor challenges her first grade students to count to ten in less than one second, they work together and find a way to count that will beat the clock.
Children's Literature
This entry in the "Robin Hill School" series is rated Level 1. The first grade is trying to count really fast? to 10 in less than a second. But of course it can't be done. That is, until the first graders huddle, discuss the solution, and then offer it up: Count by 2s! Many pages feature only one or two lines of text to encourage those who are starting to read. Language is natural with a few challenging words decipherable in context, such as "appreciate" numbers one to ten, and the tricky word "right." A good story and another good example for new readers about the importance of thinking for yourself.
School Library Journal
A first-grade teacher challenges her class to count to 10 in one second. None are able to do it, until they work together and come up with the idea of counting by twos. Large print and lots of repetition of sight words make this title suitable for early readers. The multiethnic classroom is shown in full-color cartoons, some on spreads. The second book contains only nine sight words, and introduces the lyrics to the traditional song. Colorful creatures illustrate the action by tumbling, swinging, and jumping while clearly indicating the appropriate body part. Adequate but not essential additions to beginning-reader shelves. |
