We elect officers for various membership organizations; companies elect officers, and as the kids at Robin Hill School learn, there is even an election for their class president. The story opens with the arrival of a new student, Becky, and it coincides with the day of class elections. The kids who are running for office make short speeches that promise great things—candy machines, no homework, and six months of summer vacation. Becky thinks that she would be a good president and states that she can't promise all of those things, but that she will do her very best. No extravagant promises. Oh, if it were the case in all elections—that the candidate who promises to do his or her very best ends up the winner. A good civics lesson for beginning readers in this "Ready-To-Read" book Level 1.

Three children who want the position make promises they can't possibly keep-offering no homework or a longer summer vacation. Only Becky, a new girl, is realistic: "I can only promise to do my best." Although she hasn't made any friends yet, she impresses her fellow students and is elected. Simple sentences, repetition, and watercolor picture clues aid emergent readers as they enjoy an interesting plot. While sticking to basic vocabulary, McNamara offers a book that can spark a thoughtful discussion. An excellent addition to beginning-reader collections. |
