From the Publisher
Start with something that is great big. A bumble bug? Then add more animals -- two great big chickens? -- for a sing songy read-aloud perfect for the youngest reader. The best part of this colorful book of opposites is that it never ends! Do you know something that is great big? Do you know something that is tiny little?
Children's Literature
The collaboration that produced Goodnight Moon also produced this story of big and little, reprinted for the enjoyment of contemporary audiences. The comparison begins with similar creatures such as two bugs, two butterflies, two birds, two turtles, two chickens, and demonstrates that all creatures vary in size within their own kind. At the end, the text asks the question, "What do you know that is great big?" followed by, "What do you know that is tiny little?" These questions offer an interactive opportunity that can be made into a game or an extended dialogue with a young child. The final page repeats the opening text, which brings the reader full circle to begin the game again. The illustrations echo the simplicity of the text and sparkle with primary colors and simple design. This book is recommended for ages three to six but it would also be appropriate for younger children who enjoy being read to, because the graphics convey each page's message well and allow for dynamic participation even if the child is not beginning to read.
School Library Journal
This 1938 collaboration will please today's children. Opposite pairs are presented in rhythmic text, with font sizes that grow larger and smaller: "Once upon a time/there was a great big bumble bug/and a tiny little bumble bug/And there was a great big butterfly/and a little tiny butterfly." Delightful scenes include chickens, birds, turtles, and elephants. The red, blue, green, white, and black pictures are striking in their simplicity. The final pages invite listeners to continue the story with their own big and little suggestions. A perfect choice for storytimes.
Kirkus Reviews
Reissued with new illustrations by Hurd's son, Thacher, 68 years after its original appearance, this first collaboration between Brown and Hurd of Goodnight Moon fame pairs simple, cozy animal scenes done up in saturated colors with an open-ended series of Bigs and Littles: "There were two great big chickens / and some tiny little chickens [turn] There were some great big fish / and a lot of little fish." The original was a spiral-bound board book; this new version on paper makes a bright show, capped by a pair of blank spreads captioned with an invitation to continue the rhythmic comparisons. It's aged well, though the format will likely prove less durable. |
