Hot Air와 Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin으로 2차례 Caldecott상을 수상한 Marjorie Priceman의 재미있는 그림책입니다.

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World에서 애플파이 재료를 구하기 위해 전 세계를 여행했던 주인공 소녀가 이번에는 맛있는 체리파이를 만들기 위한 주방용품들을 구하기 위해 미국 전역을 구석구석 찾아 다닙니다.

체리파이를 만들기 위한 재료들은 다 준비가 되어 있는데, 이 재료들을 섞고, 밀고, 양을 재고, 굽고, 먹기 위한 도구들이 하나도 없네요. 주방용품 가게에 갔지만, 일주일 내내 휴가를 가서 문을 닫았습니다. 결국 주인공 소녀는 주방용품들을 구하기 위해 머나먼 여행을 떠납니다.

우선 펜실바니아와 오하이오주의 경계에 있는 석탄광산을 찾아가서 파이를 굽는 팬의 재료인 철을 만드는데 필요한 석탄을 얻습니다.

배를 타고 미시시피강을 따라 내려가다가 루이지애나에서 내려서 목화밭을 찾아갑니다. 그 곳에서 부엌에서 뜨거운 것을 잡을 때 쓰는 내열장갑의 원료인 목화솜을 얻습니다.

고속버스를 타고 뉴멕시코주로 가서 질좋은 황토흙을 구합니다.

기차를 타고 미국 북서부의 워싱턴주에 있는 깊은 숲으로 가서 반죽 밀대의 재료가 되는 나뭇가지를 구합니다.

여객선을 타고 하와이로 가서 계량컵의 원료가 되는 질좋은 모래를 퍼옵니다.

미국 본토의 뉴헴프셔로 돌아와서 화강암 바위에 밧줄을 타고 내려가, 반죽판을 만들기 위한 넓적한 돌조각을 떼어냅니다.

미국 동부의 해안선을 타고 내려와서 텍사스에 도착하면 유전지대에 가서 플라스틱의 원료가 되는 원유를 얻습니다.

이제 모든 원료들을 다 구하고 집으로 돌아가는 길에 사우스다코타주에 있는 큰 바위 얼굴과 알래스카의 북극풍경을 구경하는 것도 빠뜨려서는 안되겠죠.

집으로 돌아와서는 석탄과 철광석을 녹여서 철판을 만든 후 이것으로 파이팬을 만들고, 물레를 돌려서 목화솜으로 내열장갑을 짜고, 나뭇가지를 조각해서 반죽 밀대를 만들고, 진흙으로 그릇을 만들고, 원유를 이용해서 프라스틱 스푼을 만들고, 석판을 쪼아서 밀대판을 만들고, 모래를 녹여서 계량컵을 만듭니다.

In this follow-up to How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World (Knopf, 1994), a spunky young baker is in the mood for cherry pie. She has the ingredients this time, but she's missing the equipment (bowl, pan, rolling pin, etc.) needed to get the job done. Traveling back and forth across the United States according to instructions that are given recipe style (and can be followed on the endpapers' map), she gathers natural resources from various regions (e.g., cotton from Louisiana to make pot holders) and heads home to manufacture the required objects. Smelting, spinning, weaving, carving, and glass making, the girl works until she has everything ready. The pie is a welcome addition to a July 4th celebration, where floats showcase the places she has visited. Priceman's story is expertly matched to her gouache paintings; loose and sketchy, vivid and childlike, they offer myriad details for each locale. In a school setting, the story is useful for introducing a unit on the United States and for teaching predicting skills. It's also silly enough to circulate just for fun.

In 1994 Priceman explained to readers How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World. Now the desire for cherry pie takes a girl and her dog across the country. It’s the Fourth of July and the stores are closed, so what’s a girl to do but hail a taxi and drive to a Pennsylvania mine to get the coal to make the steel to make the pan? And so it goes, as the duo races around the country finding the ingredients for, well, everything, including Hawaiian sand to make glass and New Hampshire granite for the pastry board. The trip is a madcap adventure, but there are many landmarks to observe, and children will get a sense of the breadth and scope of the country. They’ll also learn what it really means to make a pie, as the girl does everything from carve the rolling pin to mix the ingredients. The art brims with good cheer and excites with detail, opening the way for lots of discussion.
