Annotation
After his grandmother dies, a boy with a talent as an acrobat finds a home at a monastery where he must give up his "carnival ways"--until he performs one last miraculous time.

From the Publisher
Each night, Péquelé, a poor orphan, prayed with his grandmother to an angel made from straw. Maybe the angel watched over P?uel? and that's why P?uel?grew to be an acrobat who wanted only to make people laugh. When P?uel?s grandmother dies, he tries to continue entertaining the village folk, but he has nowhere to stay. A friar finds him in the freezing snow, and a nearby monastery agrees to take him in. But P?uel?will have to leave his carnival ways behind. Can a boy who was born to tumble stop? Is that what his angel would want? David Shannon's evocative illustrations and Mark Shannon's lyrical prose bring this beloved folktale to life.

Booklist, starred review
"A captivating look at an enduring legend."

Publisher's Weekly
The brothers Shannon (Gawain and the Green Knight) return with an adept and poignant interpretation of the medieval French folktale "The Acrobat of God (or of Our Lady)." Orphaned Péquelé possesses only one memento of his mother: an angel she fashioned from twigs and dried flowers. On the verge of starvation, Péquelé, a gifted acrobat, is taken in by the friars at a monastery on the condition that he "leave [his] carnival ways behind forever." The boy agrees and takes comfort in the friendship of a kind friar and the abbey's angel statue, which reminds him of his mother's parting gift. But one day, Péquelé l breaks his promise in order to cheer a small child stricken with the plague. The abbot banishes Péquelé for his disobedience. The boy begs to see the angel statue one last time — with dramatic results. A sense of wonder permeates Mark Shannon's polished and understated retelling, making the tale's miraculous elements seem credible and nearly logical. In a return to his traditional style, dramatically different from his David Goes to School (reviewed above), David Shannon here presents luminous acrylics framed by stone-window-like arches, some modest and some ornate, resembling the look of medieval masonry. The artist's brilliant characterization of Péquelé reveals a boy at once humble and larger than life. These heroic traits culminate in the volume's only full-bleed spread, a spectacular portrait of Péquelé launching into flight with his angel. A moving story that leaves a lingering impression of joy.

Library Journal
An orphaned boy pays his own homage to a religious statue-by juggling and tumbling. When a stuffy authority stops his "disrespect," a higher authority shows approval of the lad's intentions by animating the statue. Shannon follows the outline of this traditional French tale. However, he makes the statue an angel, not the Madonna and child; adds another angel as a memento of the boy's mother; provides a good-friar/bad-friar pair; and gives the plague a role in the action. In his author's note, the reteller states that he wants to "bring forward a popular appeal that transcends strict religious orthodoxy," but there are many direct references to Christianity. The angel, now sentimentally detached from any religious context, carries the boy up to the sky. The disproportionately large head, eyes, and mouth of the hero also sentimentalize (by infantilizing) him, although in other respects the clear, bright pictures, in Romanesque arch frames, add richness to the tale. Tomie dePaola's Clown of God (Harcourt, 1978), for its unabashed faith as well as its art, is still the version of choice.

Talk Magazine
For a more spiritual story, the French legend of the Acrobat of God (here a small boy named Péquelé) is beautifully rendered by brothers Mark and David Shannon.

Washington Post Book World
David Shannon's illustrations are full of life and beautifully rendered ... they capture the soul of his brother's storytelling and characterization.

Washington Parent
Exuberantly illustrated ... this tale of a miracle wrought by faith and love will appeal to folks of all ages.
