Children's Literature
The English illustrator Martin Handford may have originally intended Waldo ("Wally" in the UK, "Charlie" in France, "Walter" in Germany, and more) for kids, but since his inception in 1987, the ubiquitous character has become something of a cult figure for all ages. A television series, video games, and comics have been spun off from the idea. Now, here is the twelfth book in the series. Waldo returns with Wilma, Woof, Wizard Whitebeard, and his arch-nemesis, Odlaw ("Waldo" spelled backwards), in a hunt for pictures through the usual claustrophobic page spreads. This is not for folks with visual nausea issues. Checklists, answers, and stickers are duly part of the back matter. While his opening castle scene is nicely ghoulish, Handford's imagination and his watercolor and ink drawings are at their best in the medieval-fantasy and pirate panoramas that crop up without any particular rhyme or reason in this essentially random sight game. One does wonder what the end result might have been had he based his thirty scavenger hunt portraits on real examples from classic art. Part of the "Where's Waldo" series. |
